China and most of south east Asia prior to Hinduism/Buddhism were hunter gatherers. However to some extent the east Asians have been adaptable in using other cultures including the west to template themselves into better societies. The Monkey King story (Xi You Ju)was written in the Ming Dynasty (13 century)which is considered a recent event in China.
Before this Chinese scholars despise fictions. They were considered immoral.
