Vatukoula Gold Mines plc is a mining company with focus on gold properties. The company carries out its mining operations in Fiji.
What I don't understand is why Ratu Mara and his cabinet, in the 1970s, didn't make this Australian company partner up with another Fijian citizen businessman. This way, at least 50% of the controlling interest would have remained in Fiji and a processing plant would have been developed in Fiji rather than one in Australia. The outcome would have been, Fiji had a controlling interest in its gold production meaning higher revenue for Fiji, more jobs for Fijian citizens, and with gold prices so high-Fiji could have some leverage in the gold market.
