Very sad, she wasn't on the frontline, NZ doesn't have a role on the frontline, we are there for the reconstruction of Baymian provience, and they are not defending the nation, this is not our war, we are simply there because U.S.A has bullied N.Z into being there, and our Prime minister is to gutless to stand up to the U.S. R.I.P to those how have fallen.

Get real. Our troops are there because it's what they signed up to do, and we're involved because of a UN decision. People are quick to forget that we went there under Aunty Helen, at a time when we were hardly even talking with the U.S. Don't people keep up with events? The U.S. hasn't bullied anyone into being there (and seriously, do you think the U.S. REALLY need our help?).

What is it with all this anti U.S. sentiment?

Shows how clueless you are when you are fighting an insurgency the whole battlefield is the frontline.

And yes this is our war when are morons like you going to wake up and get real about the world you live in Afganistan was used as a launching pad by Al Qaeda to murder western people New Zealanders died on sep11,Bali and in London 7/7.

If you travel on planes, buses, trains or stay in hotels when you are overseas then it is your war.

New Zealanders are so clueless they seem to think we are a planet all of our own and what is going on in the rest of the world doesn't matter to us and doesn't effect us well it does.

Another fantastic statement. 100% agree This IS our war as much as any one else's. We would be cowards if we sat on our backsides in little old new Zealand and pretended like the rest of the world does not exist. We have a duty to support our allies.

Those last two paragraphs are right on the button,I'd tend to hazard that as long as NZ is "punching above it's weight" in rubguy ...or any other sport for that matter the average kiwi is blissfully unaware of the true realities.

Bulls*it U.S.A started this sh*t so they can get there mitts on Afghanistan's minerals and oil, the U.S is responsible for September 11th not Al Qaeda.I'm not a supporter of Al Qaeda. Why do you think Russia tried to invade Afghanistan in the 70's.

Yup, Afghanistan has been occupied by foreign troops all but about 3 years of the last century. British, Russian, Atlantic Axis 'UN', etc. The bloodshed there has nothing to do with 9/11, Bali, or any other so-called terrorist attack; it has to do with the resources in Afghanistan, and more importantly the resources that are and can be transported across the country and growing competition between the dying American empire and the growing Chinese one.

New Zealand has nothing to gain by being there, but rather a lot to lose by not being there due to our having taken sides with the Americans. We had the brief window of opportunity to pull out when a group of other countries announced their plans - but now we have Mr. Wall St. Millions in power it's not going to happen - we all know where his allegiances are.

As a side note, anyone blaming Al Qaeda for anything is either lying or misinformed. The term 'Al Qaeda' is the shortened version of an Arabic word meaning 'the database'. The particular database it is referring to is that constructed by the Americans, listing a number of Mujahideen (Muslim 'holy warriors') that were trained and recruited by American forces to fight against the Russians in Afghanistan in the '80s. Some have remained in CIA employ and are paid mercenaries still - having been found to have been invloved in Libya and Egypt and now Syria; some remain in Afghanistan and are fighting against their new occupiers, some are missing, and some are in healthy and lucrative retirement in the US. One thing is sure -'Al Qaeda' as we are fed it now by politicians, the media and other idiots does not exist; rather a whole network of tribes, relationships, aspirations and armies.

Exactly, the only intentions the the U.S had with training the Mujahiddeen was that they would over power the soviets and so the Americans could get there hands on Afghanistan's resources, why else would they invest millions of dollars into funding the Mujahideen , not so Afghanistan could get back on there feet.

This is the standard comment from one who doesn't believe / want to believe what someone says, but has no basis for disproof. The 'conspiracy theorist' card. It is a strawman argument.

The only part of my previous post that is not directly and irrefutably provable is the description of CIA-affiliated Mujahideen activity in the recent Middle Eastern turmoil; that point was based on several pieces of independent journalism and a mountain of circumstantial evidence.

If you want to disagree, at least do it with substance.

No yet again the NZDF does not have a frontline role in Afghanistan, The 1NZSAS did, we are there to reconstruct Bamiyan province and to aid the National Afghani police in training and security so that when NZDF leaves, they are capable of handling bad situations on there own. The reason why these deaths occurred was because the area where these soldiers were travelling was a risky area, because it bordered the other province Baghlan, that is where the Taliban have a stronger presence, there are a small group of Taliban supporters who are in Bamiyan province where the NZDF majority are based but because the Hazzara people are often discriminated against because of there Asian like features and the history of Bamiyan, they despise the Taliban. The Hazzara people are unique to Afghanistan that is why it is relatively safe in Bamiyan, it is when you go to areas around the borders of provinces that is when sh*t happens, the Hungarians patrol Baghlan but the don't patrol around the area where the NZDF went because of how dangerous it is. Do Abe is very hostile, that's where most of deaths have occurred. The only reason why these incidences are happening is because it is summer over there and they are not hiding in there caves, this time of the year is when more incidents happen, and because the Taliban no that ISAF troops are withdrawing from Afghanistan soon, they want to send a clear message to "withdraw your troops now not later" , but the reasons for not withdrawing our troops now, would send a message to the Taliban that we are cowards. So it is pointless in withdrawing our troops now, these soldiers paid the ultimate price with there lives.

And again we are in Afghanistan to give the Americans a good name, they used New Zealand to benefit themselves, why else would you give out millions of dollars for infrastructure to needy
Afgani's, to butter them up? Well of course, they have got to secure future investments, and how better to do it then send some kiwis over there to build good rapport with the locals.

Its because if you look back over recent global conflicts, i.e Iraq, Kuwait, & now Afghanistan, its always the Americans that instigate it, & surprise surprise, its always the Americans that benefit at the end. Just look at the current oil deals set up in Iraq, giving America massive discounts. Or the 85% of reconstruction contracts that have been awarded to American companies.
Yes, this poor girl knew what she was getting into when she joined the Armed Forces, my son is currently serving in the British Army.
But they did so, to defend their country, not to defend some god forsaken corrupt regime as in Afghanistan.
Do you seriously believe that the moment troops pull out, albeit New Zealand or British, that Afghanistan will be a better place, with equal rights for females, no drug production etc.
Or do you believe that they will fall back into being a regressive country, no rights for females, drug production as normal, BUT with a nice big American base now established in Europe.!!
