U.S. intelligence took a look at the latest Soviet fighter plane when it's Russian pilot defected and flew to Japan during the Cold War. The technology was so bad it was laughable. The radio was an old tube type and the airframe welds were shoddy and substandard. Their submarines were no better and even their best nuclear subs sank all too often. The Soviets refused western help to save one submarine crew, allowing them all to perish on the bottom rather that reveal how far behind their technology was. The Soviets had a horrific nuclear accident in 1957 and most of a remote city died. Their spaceships killed cosmonauts and they had accidental missile launches. In the 1980s the Russian army still had pig herds as food supply for their soldiers. That's right. The Russian army had shepherds that drove pig herds to follow the troop convoys. Then, there was the incident where a secret base on the Baltic Sea blew up killing 200 of the top Soviet military technicians. They were irreplacable. Most Russian technology was either captured from the Germans in WW II or stolen from the west during the Cold War. You forget that it was the United States that invented the transistor and solid state electronics and the immense technology that has followed including computers. The Soviets were always playing catchup and the Russians still haven't been able to thwart Star Wars technology. You are still baffled by the fact that the Soviet controlled news media hid the facts from the world for decades.<quoted text>
Soviet technology wasn't that bad considering they were the first to launch a satellite to orbit the earth. they were also the first to travel into space. among many other things they did. however before their downfall their technology, and economy was bad. but that was their own fault, not America's. Get your facts straight before making yourself look like an idiot

It was their early failures that killed cosmonauts and then kept secret from the world. |

North Korea routinely executes it's own citizens who cross into China looking for work and for food to escape starvation. These people are killed by North Korean border guards for bringing food back across the border for their families. Another death sentence is being caught with a cell phone. |

I didn't say "had" to be killed. Read it again! There were many unreported accidents before and after sputnik. Safety was not an issue, beat the US to space was the only goal. The world didn't hear of these until the fall of the soviet union. Get with the program! |
