Why would he suggest something like "are likely to be cut" when he shud have changed the story to "be cut". In fact him and his cabinet ministers did all the dirty eating of these monies and now they are making the people on the island suffer. Kai mo e fiafia e tau loto ka e tagi hake e tau tagata he motu he totogi e tau tupe ia. Ko e mena kona e tupe and I hope that those money they misused will come around and bite them again. Everything starts from top down its sad that nation is struggling and all of u dat do not live or support the country den ease up on wat u say! Change is good n its a gud move to reduce mps pays as well but dont forget these people r da leaders of da country they do have a lot of responsibility.

The finger should not point anywhere else other than Premier Vivian and his Cabinet himself, to be responsible for their actions. They have failed to act responsibly by doing the right thing, reduce spending and manage finance.

KANGAROO JACK

Good starting point ,hats off to the Govt ,it is clearly evident the current or past treasurer(s) and his colleagues have no idea on how to manage finances more effectively, sack the treasurer he should be accountable ,because he is paid to keep the nations finances to a level where we should not be in this position,

Niue to the core

Disgusted He who runs will always run, at least in Niue you work for your country. I guess you rather slave yourself to a palagi. Good luck on your plans.
The money problem in Niue is more complicated than the shallow reasoning evident in this column. Lets look at a few scenarios If Cabinet reduce spending (by reducing welfare payments or unilateral cuts in wages. This will reduce demand in the economy. Private sector suffers. They must increase prices to make ends meet. At the end people suffer.
If Government increase tax or increase charges people will have less income, again private sector suffer and the ordinary bloke also feels the pinch.
We must be constructive in our criticisms and innovative in our approaches to address our current problem.
What Niue needs is injection of new money from outside. On a per capita basis overseas Niueans remit the least compared to our fellow Pacific neighbours however on a per capita basis overseas Niueans has more criticism and expectations on our fellowmen and Government. Overseas Niueans sense of allegiance and affilliation is the lowest seen the lowest number of Niuean visitors back to the island. So this X mas why dont you plan a family trip back to the Rock, rekindle your pride in your own country, rediscover your heritage and enjoy a few with the most welcoming people on the planet.
By doing this you contribute to part of the solution of Niue's problem rather than part of the problem. Have anice day everyone. mafola e aho

What keva Obviously you have lost touch with the reality of what life on Niue is like today. Actually mate the statistics indicate that on a per capita basis, Niueans at home are better educated and have far better social and economic indicators than those that migrated in search of greener pastures.

Niue to the Core I don't see how you can live in Palmerston North and criticise the opinions of others on this forum - their reasons are obviously legitimate especially when it comes to seeking better opportunities for their children and their future. Sure Niue is the better place to raise your children education, economic and social wise, but admit it - it only reaches a certain point then it's out of the island they go. I hope with all your business, economic and statistical acumen you'd be more than willing ke liu kehe motu ke taute taha mena aoga moe uho ke lata moe tau tagata he motu. Its obvious that you've been blessed with oppotunity to better yourself. So don't criticise others when they seek to do the same where the sought for oppotunities do not exist on Niue and don't likely seem to come into reality anytime soon considering the fiasco Vivian and his cabinet have turned it into. So take your 'per capita basis' and put it to better use than cricitising others.(And yes I do see the irony in me criticising you, but I am disappointed that you a 'Niue to the Core' would denigrate your fellow man for trying to better himself.) As for the cabinet getting pay cuts - well let's just say that so long as Niue remains in the red - the Niuean people will continue to suffer at the hands of those who don't know how to the basics of Finance 101, let alone Managment 101. And as long as this current caucus is in place, the Niuean government will continue to be a debacle of a playground. Fresh blood is needed, New innovations of thinking is needed - nobody said change was easy, but change is desparately needed - for the sake of the Niuean people.

Concerned Our current development challenges begs for positive and constructive discourse. I have every right to express my opinion as others in this forum have however I am rather appalled by your views. So where do you derive your right to be the protector of those that cannot live up to the weight of their opinions. If you can propose some logical and practical strategies for addressing our current debacle as you alluded to I think you are the type of person Govt is looking for to take Niue forward. A change in regime per se as you proposed is not sufficient to smoothen out Niue's current hickups. Those in the opposition have deeprooted private agendas. If all you can do is make noise from the margin then I am disappointed that you have not add value to this forum. Matakainaga the next time you visit the rock I will be there toiling hard to make a difference. I hope that we share the same aspirations and I will see you on the Rock sooner. How about a shot at the next election? By the way I do not have any qualms about families who have left Niue to better their families but when you throw stones, also expect a few hurled your way. Keep me posted on how things go. Oh and yes, you will see me on the Rock doing my fair share of toiling and labouring. And no, I don't waste time blowing hot air - I do what needs to be done. I don't see how adding my knowledge to this forum can make a concerted contribution other than just spouting hot air - my knowledge is best suited and far more contributory to a forum that has ears as well as clout to put things in motion. So good luck and all the best. Mafola e aho ma Toa.

interesting debate concerned and niue to the core.the above discourse is well suited for the halls of parliament and you should both look at toiling together in niue.what is needed in niue politics is young academia, not the old politicians and the old ways of thinking.

there needs to be a good balance... the old of niue holds tradition and identity ....the young and new hold youth, energy and current knowledge........both can work together to make niue a more strong intelligent economy

Kangaroo Jack, You obviously do not have an understanding of how government works. I can say with certainty that the accountant neither past or current is to blame for this dilemma. The accountant can only advice cabinet. At the end of the day, if cabinet approves to spend the money, even against the advice of the accountant, he has no choice but to follow orders. So simply firing the treasurer or accountant will not solve the problem. Cabinet needs to learn to live within its means and to investment money more wisely.

It's the government's fault that the people are in this position. If they made the choices, The people would have a better life than before, but they have to man up and fix their mistakes.
