Tony you have no idea what you are talking about. It also ignorant to refer the civil war as "the Contra" war.

In the article Frommer says:
". To live off another person's poverty is a frequent decision in travel, justified on the grounds that you are creating a livelihood for the less fortunate"

How would he suggest that Nicaragua ever overcome the poverty that has caused the country from having the 4th highest GNP in Latin America in 1945 to being the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere in 2008 (second on to Haiti). Foriegn investment is only way Nicaragua will recover.

Rick, hi!
You must have me confused with someone else. I have never been with my wife to the Dominican Republic, yet. Nor do we (wife and I) know who Bob Gunn is. Nevertheless, would like to hear from you and your project in Nicaragua...
My wife and I are going to Bluefields soon to look for suitable accommodation for the future -we're considering relocation and we have not discarded that area.
We would love anyone as a friend who believes in Nicaragua. Those who believe in Nicaragua will be our friend(s) and more than welcome in our circle ---anyone can bash a country ( as one can see on this site )--but, how many are willing to do anything about its misery ??
Any bright ideas ?? you can contact me through my email karl@idcmiami.com
Stay well and I hope to hear from you soon!

I agree, I tried to report thiefs to two policemen but to my surprise, they started to talk to the thieves like they are the best friends, with no intention to help. It was in Granada. Nicaraguan wildlife is beautiful, but people, especially men are mostly bitches taking every opportunity to rip you off. Not to mention bus drivers who let you get off in the wrong place, even completely on the opposite site of Managua, just because you are foreigner /I speak spanish so it was not simply misunderstanding/.
Different experience is with black people on the pacific coast. They are not like those spanish speaking ones. The spanish speaking population even treat those black people bad as i witnessed spanish speaking police talking to my black friend. He told me it is because of their inferiority complex.

If you are a smart traveler you probally will not have any problems while in Nicaragua. I have lived here for over seven years and traveled in and out for five years before that. The goverment has changed but as to date there is no problems for us or tourists for the most part. Of course there is crime here but Nicaragua is relatively safe. It is a good country to visit but it is a different world here. You should know where you are going and have a van from where you are staying pick you up instead of taking a taxi, unless someone you know gets you the taxi of a perdonal friend. There is a nice hotel across the street from the airport where you can stay when you first get there so you don't have to take a taxi from the airport. Just always be mindful of your surroundings and think safty.

I have been to Nicaragua twice in the last 2 years. Very friendly people and felt very safe but was part of a medical mission. Try 'Monty surf camp" in Jiquilillo. Clean, cheap and great food.$10 a night accomodation for drop in rates and $5 a meal for great food. surf great for beginners. Not sure how the political situation with election scandal will unfold as well as collapse in foreign aid.

I've been to Granada twice, 4 weeks, and 6 weeks, it is a nice place, friendly people.

Today I head for León to study some more español. I'll let you know how it goes, or e-mail me. I plan to be in León for 6 weeks.
