BTW, when American citizens or resident aliens leave sovereign US territory, they no longer have "rights". Their "rights" are governed by the country they are in, or by agreements/treaties, if any.

I wouldn't call the hikers stupid. Careless, confused, poor map skills, they could have gotten lost and turned around, who knows. They may have felt it was safe hiking within Iraq's border. Tourists sometimes toss common sense out the window. That is what I would question—their common sense.

This problem will have to be handled diplomatically. It's all a game of one-upmanship for Ahmadinejad. He thrives on the melodrama and of course, all the media attention.

Isreal can protect her own interests. As for the three hikers they are so stupid they wouldn't know a secret Bomb making plant if you threw them a party there. They were horsing around, being cute, probably betting each other who would get closest to the border when the Irani guards caught them just over the border. They will use them to leverage the U S, and Isreal. The U S, with their weak leadership, will back down, I don't think Isreal will.
