The Hawaiians have a weight problem because they can only afford to eat Spam and rice. More food stamps for them would help.

"We're also looking at testing a culturally informed diabetes self-management program and research infrastructure for community partnerships in Hawaii," said Kaholokula, associate chairman of the medical school's department of native Hawaiian health.

Put another way, what Dr. J. Keawe Kaholokula is really trying to say is "no stuff your face like the OHA trustees, lard butt."

Sometimes the accumulation of degrees climbing every rung up to the Ivory Tower, results in loss of common vernacular understood by the Spam, All You Can Eat Pagoda Hotel Buffet regulars, as well as the Rainbows Drive-In Cellulite Club.

What Dr. Kahookula may need considering integrating into his study is an educational prong to probe actively dis-bowelling the welfare-food stamp status symbol of wealth, wherein the undereducated equate fatness with bragging about how much food they have to eat, as a low-life level sign of success.

In the days of Olde Hawaii, there were no fat bodies, except some alii who would eat to excess. All the rest of us, pretty much starved if never had kau kau.

However, even Kamehameha was known to eat sparingly at times, and there is no historical account of him every being a disgusting fat body.

So, the fat fad is a recent, novel fashion, and covering that unsightly display with a t-shirt with a Hawaiian Warrior picture on it, or misdirecting attention away from that display with a Zatoichi hair bun, cannot hide the flab targeted in this learned study about to be undertaken.

600 grand is a lot of cash. Don't spend it all in one place on Spam.

Start by eliminating mayonaise from the diet.

Exercise is what everybody needs. We had only one obese girl at Kaimuki Intermediate in 1972 and that was due to a heart condition which she died of. Everybody was fit, especially compared to kids today, who all look fat to me. We surfed and swam like fish, walked everywhere. We didn't hang out in shopping malls and play video games. There were no iPods and our parents didn't give us money. We starved until we got home.

This study is going nowhere.

Ohhhh Pleeaaazzee!! Don't give us that, "When we were your age, we used to walk to school everyday, blah, blah, blah." Or that, "kids today play too much video games, blah, blah, blah." Whatta Bunch of B.S.!!

The children today are the way they are because of YOUR generation. YOUR generation are the parents and grandparents of today's kids, so you guys are buying the kids of today all of the video games, fast foods etc. Also, maybe your generation were lean and mean as kids, but, guess what?? You folks have turned into FAT adults!

My main point is don't act like your generation was any better than today's generation. And, the reason today's generation of kids are the way they are is because of the previous generations, including YOURS!

Too expensive fo' eat healthy. Why should I spend big bucks on chicken breast, brown rice, and a fresh green salad when I can go to Costco and buy me one hot dog and drink for $1.50???

I can feed four adults with two cans of Spam, a 5 cup pot of white rice, and a bottle of shoyu. All of that would cost me less than $5.00. Wash that all down with some Malolo syrup "juice", and BINGO! I'm good to go!!

Wow, I'm still trying to get over people actually need money and programs to improve eating habbits. Isn't learning about the causes of heart attachs, high blood pressure and kindney failure enough to give you self motivation to improve your eating habbits and life style. I'm sorry, I refuse to be dyalised especially when I can control it.

Braddah, my only disagreement is that I never depended on Uncle Sam to feed my kids nor a free lunch for that matter! All their kaukau was paid with my sweat...

Daily Horoscope for December 24

Leo

Perhaps it's the fact that it's Christmas Eve and everyone is busy, but you can't help feeling that you're walking on eggshells around certain people. Their emotions are very close to the surface and could erupt at a moment's notice, perhaps in a storm of tears or a fit of pique. Calm them down and ask if you can do anything to help.
