China eyes huge tourism development for Yap

I see this as a great opportunity for Yap for Tourism and development.

My question is, since there are several days a year when the women for some inexplicable reason have to go topless, will they still have to wear the red scarf? Or is that a violation??

I disagree with this proposal...I mean, what happened to yap being what they always have been? A traditional island who always held out for their beliefs, their cultures... these will diminish as the economy grows...It's already happening and for this to happen is not an accept ion... sure, there may be positive impacts, but the negative one overrules.

@ tonia, Yes it appears both good and bad, but I see that this is another way for Yap to move forward.

its completely rational as long as the huge step in promoting tourism means more effort in preserving culture and tradition...western impact has fooled us in some areas..lets hope china's intentions would be better..

I believe this is the first step toward FSM joining with China and terminate the compact with the USA.

in reference to "it's about time that they become civilized." Are you basically saying that us Yapese are savages? We the Yapese have a beautiful culture and sets of belief. We have good morals and ethics too. The way I see it from the tone of your comment is that you are ignorant and bias.
Yap as you may say that still go naked is not that common anymore. the world has change and so as the Yapese. But we do commemorate our culture to show who we are as a Yapese.
You see Yapese in your term "naked" on special occasion, Yap day. But that is not naked in our eyes than to what the westerners does when they go gawking in their bikinis. Do you see the trend here?

Anyways, I don't mind Yap initiating this development plan with China, if it is for the betterment of economy to the state of Yap, why not take chances?

we should not stereotype China's relationship to us as communism. I don't see Yap heading into that direction with a communist government. What I see is a mutual cooperation between the state of Yap and China through economic affair.

It isn't communism you have to fear, it is what they will take and leave you. Look around the world. Look to Africa and to Tibet. When they are done, if given a good foothold, you won't have your own country any longer.

Civilized? By whose standards. A sin to go naked. Please, because of missionaries that teach this? There is nothing wrong with the human body it is some humans that have the problem. Cultures around the world have been destroyed because of other's opinions, and this mostly from missionaries. It is all about power, the power to change someone else and that isn't about G-d, it is about the desires of other imperfect beings.

I agree, China doesn't give a hoot about the local people or traditional values, they will come in smiling, get a foothold and then the teeth will show and they will be sharp. I have seen it many times in my world travels. I have many friends in China and even they see this but they aren't the greedy and they aren't the government. I hope Yap lives on strong in "their" own culture and belief system, not mine or someone else.
