Opinion: Keep American Families Together

Full story: Ballard News-Tribune

First of all, these are not American families. These are mixed families of legal and illegal persons.

Those who are being deported, are the recipients of their unlawful activities.

The fact that they chose to use their families for economic gain and put them in this posiiton in unconscionable.

Take their families with them.

Jose Vargas has lived in the U.S. for 24 years. He built his own landscaping business and employs several people working to clean up yards in many of Detroit's nicer neighborhoods.
He has two daughters, both U.S. citizens. The oldest is about to turn 21. Jose pays his taxes and his mortgage. He volunteers with his block club and his church.
Jose is exactly the kind of neighbor we wish we all had. Hardworking and community-minded, he is raising a family with his eyes on the American Dream.
Jose is also due to be deported in about a month.
When that happens, we all will lose a taxpayer, community leader and entrepreneur. His daughters will lose a father.
Why didn't Jose just "get in line" and emigrate the right way back in Mexico?
Quite simply, there is no line for Jose and millions like him. If you have hundreds of thousands of dollars or a skill like computer programming, there might be a line for you. If you have family already here with residency or citizenship, the line can be 13 years long. For working people like Jose, who built their lives by the sweat of their brows, there is no legal immigration process.
Why didn't Jose "get his papers fixed" during those 24 years? Surely there is a form he could have filled out?
For the 11 million undocumented immigrants currently living and working in the U.S., the sad reality is that there is simply no way to get their papers fixed. They're stuck.
We all understand that our immigration system is broken. Some politicians, with their eyes only on the next election, will tell you that we can simply "enforce the law" and be done with the matter. These hucksters are either lying to themselves or to you.
We simply cannot deport 11 million people. It is impossible.
To even try to deport 11 million people would leave our economy in tatters -- fruit would rot in the fields, meat would go rancid in the slaughterhouses, and all the vital, often invisible, work that immigrants do every day in our economy would simply go undone. And how many laid-off autoworkers do you know jumping at the chance to become migrant farm workers?
The 11 million should instead be required to register with the government, pay a fine and any back taxes, agree to learn English if necessary, and pass a background check. In exchange, they should be allowed to continue raising their families in the U.S. and get on an earned path to citizenship.
We cannot fix this with a wall in the desert. We cannot fix this with white-hot rhetoric and laws that turn every Latino into a suspected criminal. We can only fix this with comprehensive immigration reform.

and do you know why it isn't revised ? It's too much for you to assimilate it but we've got aging population of babybommers, should I say more ?
Medicare, Medicaid and the national treasury are on the brink because of demographic change. America is getting older. There are fewer workers relative to dependents. To sustain our standard of living, the United States needs 4 percent annual growth the next 20 years. Better technology will help, but productivity gains are not enough. We need additional resources. That means importing talent.

The United States is short 12 million highly skilled people: doctors, scientists, investors and experts in law and finance. They are shut out, blocked by an immigration regime that protects America from educated, law-abiding people who want to create wealth and pay taxes. These professionals go elsewhere -- to Canada, to the Emirates, both of which are booming -- or they develop industries in their home countries.

Instead of prizing skilled people, the Republican slate, minus Gingrich, spout a populist mantra in which foreigners steal American jobs. This repeats the error of Malthus' zero-sum island. In terms of economic policy -- Rick Perry, Michele Bachmann et al. have failed already.

(Course they didn't stand in any line to begin with)..They just need to go through the process like many who have come here legally. And if they are here illegally should be deported at once along with all their anchor babies..THAT will keep the family together..not to mention they should lose the right to ever become an American citizen because they chose to come over here the illegal way. Or send them home with a big fat fine if they want to come back legally...I'd say thousands of dollars in fines..the amount it cost to deliver all those anchor babies here. (It burns me up cuz I had to pay to have my 2 children here)

Yes, I know about babyboomers..there were a lot of babies being born during that time..2 to 3 per family..but the illegals come here and pop out 10 or so babies per family...on the house! They are helping to ruin our economy. And it's LEGAL..even if it isn't...

She told the police and ICE that she was here illegally from Columbia and gave them a false name and other false information. Don't blame this on the government, blame it on a lying, thieving, drug addicted little bitch who should take personal responsibility for her actions.

I've got an idea, since you bleed for these people. How about opening your home and your big, fat wallet and pay to support all of them while they're here.

Curiosity begs me to ask this. Have any of you put 2 and 2 together and come up with the insane idea that American citizens are married to these "illegal aliens" and them having to return to their country of origin creates a hardship on the American citizen??? Yep, lets boot them back to get their paperwork that they are going to get anyways and by golly lets add those citizens that no longer have their spouses with them to the welfare rolls because as single parents they cannot make it financially. Sometimes I wonder if there is actual rational thought put into some of these posts!
