HIS job was to handle the baggage that passengers had checked in at Changi Airport.
Some of the items the police found in Rusli's locker included five digital cameras, a pair of sunglasses and a shirt.
But Rusli Abdul Amin, 28, did more than that.
He also helped himself to valuables in the luggage, stealing items such as handphones, watches, digital cameras, perfumes and even books.
Yesterday, District Judge Aedit Abdullah sentenced the Malaysian to two months' jail after he pleaded guilty totwo counts oftheft.
A charge of fraudulent possession of property was taken into consideration duringsentencing.
Police spokesman ASP Lim Tung Li said Rusli and 12 other accomplices were arrested on 18 Aug during a joint raid by airport police and the Singapore Airport Terminal Services.
13 ARRESTED
Said ASP Lim:'In all, 13 Malaysian men, aged 21 to 36, were arrested in connection with the case.
'Three were charged in court on 20 Aug for fraudulent possession and theft, and subsequently convicted.
'Investigations into the case against the others are ongoing.'
The court heard that the airport police had received a tip-off that baggage handlers hired by a company called Manila Construction were stealing valuables from passengers' baggage.
Also, passengers had lodged police reports that they had lost items from their checked-in baggage.
The police were also told that the baggage handlers were squatting without permission at a room in the airport.
The room, which was allocated to Manila Construction by the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, was to be used only as a resting room for the baggage handlers.
On 18 Aug, around 3am, police officers raided the room, which is located near to aerobridge F54, in the apron area.
There, they found 19 workers sleeping. The place looked like a workers' quarters, Assistant Public Prosecutor Kalaithasan Karuppaya told the court.
He added that cardboards and a cooker were found in the room.
The workers' belongings were searched and items such as handphones, digital cameras, watches, music players, books, perfume bottles and jewellery were found.
Around 4.45am, Rusli returned to the room and he was searched too.
A handphone was found on him.
The police questioned him and he admitted he had a locker, where more stolen goods were kept.
CAMERAS AND MORE
These included five digital cameras, one battery charger, one pair of sunglasses and a shirt.
He later admitted that he had stolen two of the cameras from passengers' baggage in June.
He was charged with fraudulent possession of the other items, which he could not account for.
The total value of the items was unknown.
Rusli told the police officers that he didn't know who the items belonged to.
Police investigations revealed he had stolen a handphone, worth about $180, and a SIM card from a passenger's checked-in baggage at the baggage-sorting area at Terminal 2.
The passenger discovered the loss later and lodged a police report on 16 Aug.
Rusli used the stolen handphone and the SIM card to make calls to his friends here and in Malaysia.
In his mitigation in court yesterday, Rusli said he was sorry for what he did and wanted to be allowed to remain here and work after his jail term.
Rusli could have been jailed up to three years and fined for each charge.

Changi sekarang sudah tidak aman lagi sepertinya karena tangan2 kotor para malingsian ini .. Walaupun sudah 13 org tertangkap .. pasti nanti akan ada lagi para malingsian yang jadi maling. salut deh buat para polisi di Singapura yang berhasil menangkap para malingsian ini :) |

Rakan ditahan kes curi itik, 20 warga Indon merusuh
21-09-2007 06:54:22 PM IPOH: Lebih 20 orang dipercayai warga Indonesia bersenjatakan kayu, besi dan parang, merusuh di sebuah ladang ternakan itik di Bidor, 80 km dari sini malam tadi, selepas dua rakan mereka ditangkap kerana mencuri itik. Timbalan Ketua Polis Perak Datuk Hadi Ho Abdullah berkata kumpulan itu menyerbu ladang berkenaan bagi membebaskan dua rakan mereka yang ditangkap oleh penjaga ladang itu. Dalam kejadian pada 8 malam tadi, kumpulan itu turut merampas sebuah generator dan sebuah motosikal selain merosakkan sebuah lori di ladang berkenaan, katanya pada sidang akhbar di sini hari ini. "Penjaga ladang berkenaan dan dua anak lelakinya sempat melarikan diri," katanya. Hadi berkata polis telah melancarkan operasi memburu perusuh terbabit dan sehingga petang ini, belum ada tangkapan dibuat. Sebelum kejadian itu, penjaga ladang berusia 42 dan dua anak lelakinya yang berumur 19 dan 16, berjaya menangkap dua daripada tiga lelaki yang sedang mencuri itik di ladang mereka. Seorang lagi lelaki sempat lari dan mendapatkan bantuan rakan-rakannya dari beberapa ladang berhampiran. Hadi berkata penjaga ladang itu telah menghubungi polis berhubung kes kecurian itu tetapi rusuhan itu berlaku sebelum pasukan polis tiba. Student attacked by Mat Rempit after crash
By NUR AKMAL KUALA LUMPUR: A group of Mat Rempit threatened a college student and damaged his car with helmets and other objects in Subang Jaya. Chin Yaw Fung, 20, was driving along Federal Highway at 3.30am on Sept 2 when his car knocked into a Proton Iswara car. “I alighted from my car and apologised and was even willing to pay for the damage but the car driver refused to settle the matter. “Suddenly, about 20 Mat Rempit rode by and started shouting and threatening me. “I got into my car and drove off,” he said at a press conference held by MCA public complaints and services department chairman Datuk Michael Chong yesterday. But Chin's car had a puncture at Subang Jaya and he pulled over to stop and found that the Mat Rempit had followed him. “Then some of them jumped on top of my car and started swinging their helmets, sticks and steering locks at my car,” he said, adding that he sounded his car horn but no one went over to help him. Several minutes later, a tow-truck driver pulled over. Only then did the gang members stop their attack. Before fleeing, they took his cellphone, a jacket and an expensive pen. Chin later lodged a report at the Petaling Jaya police headquarters. In another case, painter Yap Khong Tjun was assaulted by a motorcyclist after an accident in Bandar Tasik Permaisuri about 8pm on Monday. “It was a minor accident but he refused to settle the matter and we decided to walk to the police station, which was nearby. “As we were walking, the man swung his helmet at my head several times,” he said, adding that he lodged a report at the Petaling Jaya police headquarters. kasian bener ras china di malaysia. udah tertindas, dirampok pula. geng apa sih mat rempit ini? kok beritanya banyak sekali. di indonesia kalo ada geng-gengan gini udah disweeping sama masyarakat. malaysia betul-betul gak aman. negara kecil tapi kriminalitas tinggi. |
