On Nov. 10, 1871, reporter Henry Stanley located missing British explorer David Livingstone in a small Tanzanian village, and uttered the now-famous line.

There was a biologist who did this recently for National Geographic and it was amazing to see how much of that continent is still unexplored and virtually unpenatrable.

What impresses me most about both journeys - Livingstone's and Stanley's - is how difficult they'd be for the average person today, let alone back then when there were fewer navigation tools, less-detailed maps, lousy hiking gear, etc.

I agree with you, Intrepid Implorer,that the average person today would be ill-equipped to even attempt this journey. I doubt either Livingstone or Stanley was extensively trained in survival skills - and yet they made it work. Amazing stuff.
