I have a Lithuanian relative whom our family legend calls "Rudis the Red". He changed the name due to the political climate, and the family believed he changed it to something that sounds like Shakez or Sharekees.......I located the Stravinskas family in Vilkiautinis, LT but have yet to find Rudis the Red. I will try the Lithuanian phone book to look for the Rudis surname because I made the incorrect assumption that Rudis was a given name......

My last name is Rudis, i was always told that it was a Lithuanian name. Ofcoarse i would ask my father or his father, but they both died when i was young, and i don't talk to that side of my family anymore. I was just wondering if you could help me at all because i'm just trying to find out something about my heritage.
I believe that my grandfather was completely Lithuanian, unless i've been told wrong.
Thanks for any help.

Rudas stands for "brown". Rudis is brown or red haired, indeed. You should look also for Rudys.

Luckus and Sauwakaitis - Lithuanian. Dulzki is not. Sauwakaitis surname seems to be modified, not a original form.

My maiden name was Miksis. My paternal grandfather from Lithuiania. He died when I was 3. My paternal grandmother was from Poland. I know nothing about my Lithuianian heritage. Was hoping to find out what this name means, where it is from. I am not sure it was spelled this way in Lithuiania. Thank you.

I have been searching the ancestry of Mary Sophie Uszik. Does Uszik sound as though i tis Lithuanian? She was born in Lithuania according to US 1930 Census. Family legend is that she emigrated to US when she was just a young girl. I could not find name similar to Uszik in Ellis Island passenger lists. Can you help? my mail is cin567 at g mail

I am doing some research for my mother in law on her family. I have found her grandmother Elzbieta Trauskauskiute's name on a marriage license in 1902. Could this spelling even be close to what it actually was? If it is, is the name common in Lithuania or was it particular in a certain region.

Thanks,

Heather

I am researching my significant others family history for a trip to Lithuania this summer. his current last name is Velush which we know was changed at Ellis Island in 1906. He Great grandfather's name is Michael Velush. We think that his Lithuanian last name was Velusius or something close to that. Is this a correct spelling? Can someone tell me the Lithanian spelling for Michael? thanks! My email is dzniki1029@earthlink.net if you can help.

Miksis. No meaning, just surname. Impossible to tell only by surname where it comes from. More hints needed. Anyway, it's Lithuanian name.

I had a teacher once ask me where my last name came from, I had no clue. No one has ever asked me that before, they just made fun of it and called me "useless".
So I went home and asked my father, and he said Lithuanian. I still haven't figured out who came to America , I know my great grandpa was here, and I do believe he was the first in our family. So is Usas lLithuanian?

Yes, there are many people by that name in the Lithuanian white pages:

http://www.zebra.lt/lt/suzinok/telefonai

"Pavardė" means surname.

You can get a free 14-day trial here and possibly track your ancestry back to a passenger manifest:

Hi - I am trying to track my grandfather's family and entry into the US from Lithuania (pre-1905 when he was born in NY)- I am having trouble because I assume they changed their name at some point. By the 1930s, my grandfather was going by "Francis (Frank) Anthony Jordan" - on his death certificate, it says his mother's name was "Jusatis". I can't seem to find anyone matching them with that name or a close variation either before I find him in the 1930s. Can anyone help with other possible spellings of a varient on Jusatis or Jordan?

Thanks!

Hi, Karilas,
I have a student in my class whose last name is Rimdzeviciute. You probably know it is a maiden surname
Karilas wrote:
Hi Kris, you seem well up on lithuanian names, wondered if you could help me out a bit with mine, if you please.
My grandfather came over to england shortly after the second world war [i think] bringing the name Rimdzevicius with him, I'd ask him about it all, but sadly he died of a massive heart attack when I was only two, anyhooo, I was just wondering if you could tell me exactly how that should be pronounced, as I've always said, wait a sec, how can I best write the phonetics? ah yes, "Rim-dzev-it-chus" or thereabouts and since my whole family is english none of them are 100% certain!
I really know very little about the lithuanian language and lithuanian names, but it would be quite nice to know a little about mine if you can help me
thank you kindly

Pronunciation as Jushaitis is very rare. Jusaitis pronounced as Jusaitis.
Jordan-Jurgis? I don't think so.

Daily Horoscope for June 4

Taurus

Get involved in financial transactions at your peril under today's Lunar Eclipse, because certain people will use them as a stick to beat you with. For instance, if you ask someone to lend you money they'll either make you feel guilty about it or dredge up all sorts of past instances when their trust was betrayed. You would also be well advised to avoid any show of possessiveness or jealousy, even if you feel it, unless you truly don't care about the disastrous outcome.
