"BEIRUT: No, not the hydrocarbon-based fuel so vital to the world’s economies, but an abbreviation of a phrase much uttered during the summer:“Only In Lebanon.” It’s that time of the year when the country grows hotter, and its roads are overwhelmed by the influx of tourists, many of whom are expats living abroad in Europe or the Americas. Ever proud of their country, Lebanese delight in showing visitors around, and this summer, having welcomed to Lebanon a friend of mine from London, they’ve found that many of the questions asked by a non-native can be answered by the simple phrase,“Only in Lebanon,” or “OIL.” "

BEIRUT: At a Verdun intersection a traffic light flashes red, signaling drivers to stop, but a woman in a red SUV scoots across the road in defiance of the light, driving past a policeman who exasperatedly slams his fist against the hood of her car. She doesn’t stop; she simply keeps driving, and the officer laughingly shakes his head in frustration.

Compared with 100 percent of Colombians, 54 percent of Lebanese respondents agreed that certain behavior should be “off limits” during armed conflict. JOUNIEH:“I criticize things using humor and sarcasm,” says Maya Zan koul.“I laugh about Lebanese problems instead of nagging or complaining or being negative about them.” Perhaps as a result of this humorous bent, Zankoul, trained as a graphic designer, began to record the joys and annoyances of her daily life in an illustrated blog, called “Maya Zankoul’s Amalgam.”

[Living in a] Dream World
"Lebanon as a state has been, ever since its creation , living in a state of denial. If you listen to the Lebanese politicians opine about democracy, freedom, individual liberty, sovereignty, human rights and economic development you would be perfectly justified in thinking that the state of Lebanon is as close to an idyllic place as any nation can get. But then reality intrudes and the listener decides to investigate the rhetoric emanating from the mouths of those whose personal ego, wealth and worldly power depend on perpetuating the myth that they speak off. "Kamal, whose name has been changed at his request, is a 40-year-old pimp based just outside of Beirut, where prostitution thrives, though illegal, in hotels, nightclubs, brothels, private homes, chalets and even on highways. “I inherited the trade from my father,” he told AFP.“To me, it’s just a regular job.” “Demand soars in the summer season, so we help each other out across the networks. They pass girls over to us when we need them and vice versa,” Kamal explained. " |

1 Make believe they are descendants of the Phoenician (who at least achieved many things). Pretend to achieve something when they make no contributions to the world. |

1 Shiites penniless after investing with 'Lebanese Bernie Madoff' The investor sat back in a plastic chair in his hardware store and sighed, unable to explain how his life savings had vanished so quickly into thin air. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/16/world/middl... My favorite quote from the article in the link above: "“All this happened because of the United States and Israel,” Mr. Fneish added, echoing a refrain that springs easily to people’s minds here.“When they discovered that Ezzedine was close to Hezbollah, they ruined him.”" |

Reckless motoring continues to claim lives of young Lebanese
Car-safety group looks to promote prudence among youth By Dalila Mahdawi Daily Star staff Thursday, October 01, 2009 Louaize: When Aldo Abboud, 25, got into a car with a drunk driver two years ago, he thought nothing of it.“I was on drugs and drunk, so I don’t remember anything” about what happened, he said. The speeding driver, who had polished off two bottles of whiskey earlier in the evening, attempted to overtake a car without realizing a car traveling in the opposite direction was doing the same. http://www.dailystar.com.lb/article.asp... |
