Well, I was born in Russia. I've got relatives on Soviet side and relatives on a German side fighting each other. The war was terrible, no one really knows who is right or wrong. Stalin's Russia was very terrible, so was Hitler's Germany. Commies are no better than Nazis. Even though I do not agree with the Waffen SS rally, they were murderers.

June 14 1941, Stalin packs 14000 Latvians into cattle cars and sends them to Siberia. many did not even make it there, especially infants and pregnant women. many have ben tortured prior to boarding. All Latvian military officers the Soviets could get their hands on were told to report for supplementary training and shot at military camps in Latvia. Some survived and fled to the forest. A second planned deportation was only halted by the Nazi invasion of the USSR and Latvia. From 18 June my grandmother hid at a beach house with my infant Mother and other siblings as they were warned that they were on the list in the upcoming deportation. Their father had already been tortured and then deported to central Asia in late 1940.
On 1 july 1941 when Z germans arrived they were greeted as liberators. Thus they saved my mothers life and could come out of hiding. Thousands of others were saved by the german attack on Russia. Thats not to say that the germans did not kill many latvians during their occupation. that is already well documented and publicised.
In 1943 as Russians advanced many Latvians volunteered to to fight against them but were banned from doing so in Latvian uniforms or as soldiers in the Wermacht. Only SS could legally take them. They were not trusted as supporting nazi ideology and you can read books written by German generals which clearly state that Latvians were only fighting for their homeland and not for any love of nazi Germany. None were members of the nazi party and the legions anthem was WE WILL HIT THE LICE RIDDEN ONES, reds THEN THE BLUE GREY ONES, nazis. That song was sung as legionaires marched to the front.
Read the book The Latvian Legion according to independent sources by Visvaldis Lacis. Not even reporters from Israel wish to interview him as his answers are to intelligent and backed up by truthful documents that they no longer have any sensational story to tell. He is retiring from latvian parliament in a few months.

Russians will live where they have lived for many centuries. Nobody cares what the artificial boundaries of the west have to say.
