Latvia bans Waffen SS veterans march

Latvian authorities have banned a street march planned by a nationalist organization for March 16 to commemorate Latvians who fought for Nazi forces in WWII, Riga parliament said on Tuesday.

A Latvian SS Legion march in 2005 through Riga resulted in dozens of arrests after protests by Russian activists. The march involved WWII SS veterans and young nationalists.

Relations between Russia and Latvia and Estonia have been marred in the past few years by what Moscow calls the unequal treatment of ethnic Russians, the alleged persecution of Soviet WWII veterans, and the apparent revival of nationalism and fascism in the Baltic states.

The title is misleading. There are no Waffen SS veterans marching, rather it is a nationalist organization. The application was for 50 people to march.

I think the article below is an unbiased and honest look at neo-nazism in all of Eastern Europe.

Quite interesting.
We are always told that these marches don't exist!
Although they make headlines in Europe and are seen on TV, the Baltic guys always say there are no such things as SS marches.

Smetana, you and your Human Rights NGO should get going and stamp out these despicable Baltic neo-nazis.

Or maybe your critics are only applicable in the case of Russia!! LOL

All right, we'll get right on it! First we should start where the largest amount of neo-nazis are, Russia!

What I am on about are SS veteran meeting marches sanctioned officially by the governments of Baltic republics. I am even told that some monuments have been specially dedicated to them.

Also, apparently Ukraine was going to pass a law to recognise pro-NAZI ex-Bandera outlaws as ex-servicemen and start to pay them pension like any legitimate ex-serviceman.

Neo-nazis skinheads are of no interest to me: they are not officially endorsed by any government that I know of, and almost every country has them: Britain, Germany, Denmark, etc...even Russia !!

Doesn't look like this march is either officially sanctioned (it was actually banned) or involves any veterans.

As for Ukraine, any pro-Nazi partisans quickly came to fight against them after they realized that the Germans were not going to grant independence. Russia slanders these partisans because they later fought against the Soviets. WHy shouldn't they be considered veterans in an independent Ukraine when what they were fighting for was indpendence?

So, what's the problem Smetana? You can't find Estonian SS marches on the internet? There are links, even on YouTube. There was even a whole thread about it, ask Tarmo who is an SS apologist!

As for the Bandera bandits, check with Yushchenko's proposal last year. He wants to give them the statuws and pension as war veterans.

There are links also. Ask Stephan on the Ukrainian forum, or Krishnamurty who thinks it's a good idea too!!

No I can't find any. Nobody has yet except for some random, poorly sprayed graffitti which is used as "proof" of Estonian fascism. I was comenting on Latvia. This is not government sanctioned nor does it involve any SS veterans. And since your not interested in neo-nazis as you stated, what is the problem?

I agree with Yushenko giving the men who fought against both Nazis and Soviets for an independent Ukraine to recieve the same treatment and benifits as a Red Army veteran in an independent Ukraine.

LOL...Smetana, you can't find any links of Estonian fascism. You couldn't find any becaause you didn't look, silly boy.Fact is that neo Nazi movements are gaining ground in some Balitc states.
Neo-Nazi sentiment is on the increase and Nazism is glorified in the Baltic countries and Ukraine. Monuments are pulled down there of the Soviet Army soldiers who defended the world against the Nazi plague during the Second World War, while former SS-men, involved in mass-scale exterminations of people are currently glorified.

This organizations (like National Bolshevik Party from Kasparov's "The Other Russia" coalition) is banned as extremists by Russian government. In Baltic countries this organizations have full support of government. But this ban on SS march is a step in right direction.

*There are now at least 70,000 skinheads in Russia and probably many more. That is 50% of the world's skinhead population.

http://continentsmith.blogspot.com/2007/08/ru...

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/section/2/story.cfm...

Adhering to a blend of neo-Nazi ideology and rabid Russian nationalism, Russian skinheads are among the most violent, and have staged a wave of savage attacks on non-Russians and children as young as 5 in the past year, leaving many of their bleeding victims to die slowly.

Forty-four people were killed in racially motivated murders last year, more than double the previous year, human rights activists say. Many perpetrators were young, white skinheads shouting neo-Nazi or nationalist slogans. They rarely shoot their victims, preferring to stab them repeatedly or beat them to death with chains or knuckle-dusters.

The odds are always stacked in their favour because they hunt in packs of at least three and pick vulnerable targets. Their ranks seem only to swell, from about a dozen in the early 1990s to up to 60,000 today.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2007/aug/16/r... <----Here is what happened to those Russian NAZI's who beheaded the Asians....NOTHING !

http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9...

*As founder of the Group for the Rights of Ethnic Minorities (GPEM), Girenko had been a key adviser in 15 Russian ethnic hate-crime trials, including the current prosecution of six members of the St. Petersburg neo-Nazi group Schultz88 for violent assault. Girenko's work has been crucial in ensuring that racially motivated assaults are classified as hate crimes, rather than mere hooliganism, and therefore warrant harsher sentences. He was gunned down as he was preparing for another trial, this one on charges of inciting racial hatred and violence involving a regional branch of the neo-Nazi Russian National Unity (RNE) party in nearby Novgorod. Police cite Girenko's expert advice as the most likely motive for the hit, but are tight-lipped about possible suspects. No arrests have yet been made.

Really? Strange that noone has found them yet. We have repeatedly asked for those links. The result was ZERO! So can you give us any of those links? Or are you lying again?
Btw, I don't know any Estonian SS apologists. We all have repeatedly condemned the nazis and all war crimes.
But I know 1 soviet apologist. Guess who :)

PS: you will find the biggest number of neo-nazis probably in Russia. And the biggest number of racial-based murders too.

Monuments are pulled down? No, just a single one and this was just relocated to a cemetery.
And remember also what those defenders did to eastern Europe before and after the nazis were defeated.

No, SS-men, involved in mass-scale exterminations of people are condemned and despised. You are simply lying again. Perhaps you can prove it? I guess not.

Well said! Unfortunately he is not the only one. As you have witnessed youself, there are plenty more like him in Russia. Do you think that there are ANY Russians who feel ashamed for what was done in their name? Do you think that there are any that feel apprehensive, uncomforatble and ashamed about what is going on in their country? Surely some of them can see the real motives of their leaders?
Sadly it seems to me that the world has become a great deal more dangerous place thanks to Putin and his band of blind, stupid and ignorant followers. Russian constantly speak about their nation's abilities and achievements and with some right. However, when it comes to THE MOST IMPORTANT things in life they act as if history has taught them nothing.

I don't have any exact statitics and I would be surpised if any such figure did exist. The article I linked to stated there were roughly 70,000 in Russia. I admit my comment was a sarcastic reply without concrete numbers to Rob's sarcastic comment.

This already been posted and discussed here.
Some peaceful people bring flowers to graves and they are being attacked by some aggressive mob.
Don't see any SS or nazi symbols.
