Did you know the Russians maintain an airbase at Kant - only about 30 km from Manas. They pay Kyrgyzstan absolutely nothing.
Why? Because they are able to hold the threat of a reduction in vital trade over the head of the Kyrgyk government.
The reason, the Russian government has a base 30km away from manas airport is that, Kyrgyzstan was part of USSR and when independence in 1991 was signed, the Russian wanted power in Asia so we agreed to give them a land to set up a military base until 2010.

Me-Me, I am married to a woman from Bishkek. We live in Florida, USA. I'd like to make a few observations.
First off, she told me there is an abundance of corruption there. So the Government doesn't care about its own people. They only care about their personal power and financial gains.
Second, many people from the Kyrgyz Republic go to Russia looking for a better life, much like Mexicans do here. When they arrive, they get beat up by young racists Russians. So Russians don't like Kyrgyz people either.
And finally, she told me that China is buying everything in the Kyrgyz Republic, and so she is afraid of losing her appartment there. I don't know how much of this is true, but it sure doesn't sound so bad to be on the side of the USA. At least we don't shut down the free press.
She told everything, Kyrgyzstan has been dying since 1991, the government even sold the land to Pamir mountains that today cost over trillion $$$, for what, you may ask, for an estimate of 3 milions in today $. Image selling property for 0.00001% of total value. The head of states are a bunch of d*** heads. I am ashamed about the properity of my country.

I am a former member of the US military and I was deployed to Manas AB in Bishkek, Kyrgzstan in 2005. I can tell you from personal experience that the US military is not in Kyrgystan to hurt/harm anyone in the country. They are there to do ONE job...air refueling for Operation Enduring Freedon (Afghanistan). The US military has helped to fund orphaneges and the childrens cancer center in Bishkek. I know I was there. We brought toys to children in the cancer center and had our own "day camp" with all kinds of events for children to do... on the military base. The entire time I was there we had fundraisers to help the poor and sick people of Kyrgyzstan and I supported every one of them. My only regret is not giving more. The US military also provides jobs with great pay for Kyrgystan citizens. Like I said before, I was stationed there...living in tents, eating in them, showering in them, etc... I know how big that base is... it's not even 1/2 mile wide x 1/2 mile long and the US government is paying SO much money for it. Unfortunately the people of Kyrgyzstan will never see that money b/c their gov't is taking it all.

I don't know if people truely understand why the military is there... it is not to cause any damage to Kyrgyzstan. The people there are great. I don't know the full story about the local man that was shot while trying to enter the base. I do know that if the story is true, if he was holding a knife and threatening anyone... he would have been shot on a US base as well. The young soldier was following the military rules of engagement.
Sometimes we don't like to think about what we would do if something like that every happened to us... maybe we should!

The US military is HELPING Kyrgyzstan not harming them! If you don't know what's REALLY going on over there, you are basing your opinions on the News... and hopefully you know that the only News that sells now is BAD NEWS.

I'm sure most of you have never heard any of the good things the military has done over there. It's a shame!

Well said, Prior Service! I was there too (2006)and confirm everything you say.

Regarding the last line of your post, as Mark Twain once said, "if you don't read the newspaper you are uninfomed. And if you do read the newspaper, you are misinformed."

The lack of responsibility in reporting and the pandering to sensationalism and negativism in the media is a curse of a free society. No accountability!

In all the places I have been stationed (Asia, Kuwait, Afghanistan, Europe - including visits to the former Soviet occupied East Germany back in the old days) I have never seen or heard of any caring or concern for the local populace by Russian military members. I have never had a local resident express anything but regret that Russians soldiers were around. Their mindset seems to be to dominate and bully. Not help.

I believe the US military is a great example of the sort of mindset produced by a free society. Other free states also contribute to the well being of other countries as a matter of military operation. Right now there are 39 of them helping in Afghanistan to not only keep the twisted Taliban and AQ away, but to improve the lives of the Afghans themselves.

Where are the Russians in this effort? No where. Their modus operandi during their occupation of Afghanistan was to hammer the population into compliance. They systematically and deliberately brought unspeakable horrors to the people, not betterment.

I hope Kyrgyzstan is able to walk the tightrope between the Russian, Chinese, and US influences in Central Asia. As you said, the people are wonderful folks!

If I had been alive in 1781, and if I had a lot of money, I would have invested in the United States.
If I had a lot of money today, I would invest in Kyrgyzstan.

Tony02and etc, can I just say Tony? What's that? Your military number?
You're married to a woman from Bishkek? Great! Is she Kyrgyz? Just curious.
Fortunatelly OR unfortunatelly, Kyrgyzstan is not corrupted on that level as many other countries, for instance, USA or France. Kyrgyz people haven't got that much money :-)
Cannot say that Kyrgyz people and some other people from countries of Former Soviet Union go to Russia for a better life, but for more money. Just like some americans attend Army or go to work in Kosovo. Russian racists do not like any other nationalities but themself that is why they are called racists. But I can only feel sorry about them sad bastards.
I cannot see the logic in what your wife is saying - chinese buy everythig and that is why she is afraid to loose her apt. If Chinese BUYING then they can only BUY her wife's apt from HER.
But is she really afraid of loosing her apt, she needs to sell the flat :-)
If you really want to know about Kyrgyzstan more, I suggest you to read more information from different sourses so you can compare. Even better if you come to visit Kyrgyzstan.
Re free press. Are you really so naive thinking that you have absolutely freedom in press? There is no such freedom but just different limits in different countries.
No need to be on smbody's side. Stay on your own side and communicate with others.
