It is not true about language, the 59% of population is kazakh people it means majority, and we are not assimilated by russian people, generation that born in times of Soviet Union mostly were tought in russian schools because kazakh schools as well as other schools were close, so that generation don't know it well. but the generation of ougrand fathers kept our language and now when we are independant, new generation speeks kazakh language, and those who didn't started to learn and speek.I'm very happy that we haven't lost our language and new generation of indpendant Kazakhstan speeks 3 language, Also the compain of spreading kazakh language is held, so nowadays you can hear russian people and other nationalities ( they actualy spoke it before, most of them)speek kazakh language. I like it.

I recently returned from a two year assignment in Almaty. Almaty is a lovely city on the north slope of the Tien Shan mountains. It reminds me of home in the Canadian Rockies. Almaty has numerous parks and boulevards and many many fine restaurants with a large variety of ethnic cuisines. The people are friendly and very accomodating to foreigners. Almaty is also home to the most beautiful women.
Although Russian is the language of business, there is a push to use Kazakh and many local businesses are having their staff attend Kazakh language classes. I don't know if it is passed into law yet, but there is a movement to replace the Cyrillic alphabet with the Latin alphabet for the written language.
Saule, how do like Saskatoon? Where in Kazakhstan are you you from? I hope to return to Kazakhstan soon.

I'm in Almaty right now and can tell you that I have never seen a single youngster speaking Kazakh I'm very happy that we haven't lost our language Unfortunately you have. Just take a walk on Almaty and listen to people's talk. My Kazakh friend claiming fluency in Kazakh told me that americans were so stupid to support financially pro-russian opposition and as a result they have a vast majority of local people disguisting US both from pro-russian and pro-Kazakh groups. He loughed on americans following their leaders in stupidity invested huge amounts in political forces working for russian interest and therefore against american.

I am an American who lived in Kazakhstan for two years with Peace Corps. I loved Kazakhstan and the people there. Kazak is now the official language though Russian is still spoken. I actually learned more Russian because I lived with a Russian host family near Almaty. The people are nice and hospitable. I miss Kazakhstan very much and have made arrangements to go back.

First of all Kazakh do have enormous hearts, and they well known for their generosity. If anybody to explore real culture of Kazakhstan would recommend to visit South Kazakhstan, bcs that part managed to keep very strong kazakh tradition and of course the language. speking about south part it is a place where originally the kazakhs come from. native kazakhs are mix of Turkic and Mongol nomadic tribes who migrated into the region in the 13thn century. It is definitely very interesting place to visit with very wiled/unspoiled nature.

I do agree with you. Here in Canada too, probable in USA as well, when these big credit companies go bad and they get bail-out 'cause people on top miss-manage the money, but you or I the small guys don't get bail out, and we carry the weight of the financial melt-down. I hear you. In North-America if a small guy makes a mistake or miss something, guess what he/she gets ..........
