PageOneQ | Boycott Jamaica

Gay bashing in Jamaica is so prevalent that in 2006 Time Magazine wrote an article about the island headlined, "The Most Homophobic Place On Earth?" The New York Times this week showed that the anti-gay climate ...

It must be because they're all gay over there. You know how that is, they're gay and so f'ed up about it that they try to prove they're not by degrading gays. It's not hard to figure out. Look at all the politicians and religious folks here that end up voting for laws against or preaching against gays and they get caught and found out. Life is that simple you know. It's a psycological thing or something. What a shame. I wonder what caused there to be so many gay people in Jamica? Something in the water? Too bad they were made to feel so bad about themselves that they resort to this kind of behavior.

The answer seems obvious: that little misguided notion called religion. The first book Jamaicans ever owned was a Bible, brought to them by those OH so merciful mercenaries, the Christians. Needless to say this country has more than its fair share of jerks and we don't mean Chicken.

I would boycott Jamaica, except I am already standing in solidarity with its people over politics related to their "agricultural products".

Never mind their homophobia...their crime rate against tourists is excessive. I mean, why would I vacation at a resort "compound" where the entire resort is fenced in and armed security guards patrol the perimeter.

Higher quality products are more readily available in several of the United States now. And if that is the only reason for your vacation next time visit with Amsterdam.

I doubt if jamaica is upset about a gay boycott of their miserable little country. What is needed is a tourist industry boycott. Convince the airlines and cruise industry that jamaica is bad news. Educate the public about just how miserable jamaica is, not just for gays, but everyone. Then perhaps alarmed by the losses in tourism, the powers that be might address these problems.

Jamaica ISN'T WORTH VISITING. The other islands of the Caribbean are friendly and welcoming and you get the same climate. So avoid Jamaica, let them starve. It's what they deserve for being so ANTI- CHRISTIAN, for that is what all bashing is. Primitive people have primitive behavior.

Jamaicans as a people are disgusting. I work with some in the hospital and they are extremely mean to elderly people who need their help. They make the old folks feel worthless just for ringing a call bell to get assistance to the bathroom! It doesn't surprise me that they try to bash gay people. They're primitive and uneducated. Boycott Jamaica!! Do not spend your hard-earned American dollars in that horrible place.

That's the most mature and sensible thing anyone's said on this thread. If worldwide homophobia is ever to go away, it will be because people respect and value each other. Canadians rock.

Meanwhile, if you want to lounge on a beach with one of those fruity drinks with the little umbrella in it, there's always the Bahamas or the Cayman Islands.... and Fire Island in NYC is practically a complete refuge from homophobia, even if it's not sub-tropical.

As for Jamaica, I haven't been there, nor do I know any Jamaicans. All I know is that Rastafarianism is the main religion... a Christian denomination in which the church encourages its members to smoke really high-grade marijuana as a sacrement. Sounds like some wires got crossed somewhere.

Haiti is very welcoming to gays, they are well known for bending over backwards for them.

Why don't you do your homework before writing. That is not correct. How can you be christian and rast at the same time? It is not the main religion either. It is true, that there are bad people in Jamaica, but the amajority of the people will not bother you if you are gay. I was born there and have always known gay people which no one bothered. You must realize that the people who are doing bad things to people there are the ones who are naturally evil not just against gays, but anyone for that matter. I would invite you to get to know the other side of the other Jamaicans who are down right irrie and kind.

Your right! The people might be! However, I have written the government of Jamaica about this issue.. I go to the caribbean all the time but do not go near jamaica because if it's "government" not it's people. people are azzholes the world over.. so are governments.

Ok I am really and truly disturbed by the things that you people are posting about my homeland...and to be quite frank God neva mek Adam and Steve but, Adam and Eve so all who caa stand Jamaica and their beliefs go find a hole and bury yourself in it. Jamaica is not that bad of place incomparison to some places I've heard of, so do me a favor if ya'll aint got nothing better to say i suggest ya'll don't say anything either. As far as it goes for Jamaica being ANTI-CHRISTIAN that's bullsh*t, it is because of the bible being opposed to homosexuality why the country doesn't favor it...and the people are very friendly and nice so stop spreading bad news on my country!!!

I used to go to Jamaica quite often. I would rent a house for a week outside of all the tourist areas. Now with crime so bad and all the publicity of anti-gay attacks, I just won't support the Jamaican government with my tourist money.

There are many areas of the Carribean that are gay friendly. Why should we support Jamaica when the government sends the message we aren't welcome?
