I don't know whether people realize that Indonesia had already given 3 referendums: Papua, Timor, Aceh, all under UN supervision. Papua chosen to join Indonesia, Timor chosen to be independent and Aceh chosen to be part of Indonesia but with its own law and government. It's not like Indonesia is against any form of referendum, the objection from Indonesia and Indonesians is to those the external voices who just want Indonesia to break out by asking referendum to each and every island or province, Indonesia has a very long history of colonialisation and VERY LONG ROAD to gain its independence (the Dutch were reluctant to give it, you can read Indon's history after WWII, 45-49). Considering Indonesia is a collection of islands, this couldn't be happening forever, it's like an Indonesian asking Sabah of Malaysia or part of Australia to get a referendum.

Personally I dont have problem Indonesia giving a referendum to Papua, but from my own experience, a large number of Papuans esp the youth are quite happy to be part of Indonesia, many "Putera Daerah" were sent to Java or Jakarta for either school or work and then to get back to rebuild their home and area. Free Papua movement is just like Free Maluku or Free Aceh movement, they are only a small minority and not necessarily agreed upon the other majority.

Why isn't the Australian Govt supporting the Papuans? Are we to stand by watching this atrocity just like we did with East Timor? Talk about gutless! To do nothing makes us just as bad as the Indonesian pigs.
