I just visited Indonesia some time ago, to visit my friend from the university. He's an Indonesian, so during my vacation I decided to go to Indonesia for a vacation and visit him. I must say that Indonesia is not a country worth visiting ... sorry about this, Andy if you read my posting. For starter, Jakarta is very dirty, you'll see trash and litter everywhere you go. I just can't imagine a capital city with this poor level of cleanliness. I was fortunate to have Andy my friend to show me around Jakarta, in which rarely tourists are shown to. Areas that you may see quite clean and sophisticated are only in the downtown area. I only remembered the streets named Sudirman, Thamrin and Kuningan that are quite representative for a capital city. Any other areas you go, you'll feel like that you're in some third-world country with poor people and trash everywhere (I think Indonesia is still considered a third-world?) I was lucky I have a friend in Jakarta, otherwise I wouldn't dare goind around in public transportation. I was told to be careful when selecting cabs. I remembered there is only one company considered safe, called Blue Bird or something, with their cars painted in blue. I was told not to take just any cab since it wouldn't be safe. I was told there are so many crimes occured involving taxi drivers. I certainly didn't want to take the public busses. Wait until you see them yourselves, and I bet you wouldn't want to ride in one either. The busses are so dirty, so packed with people and the vehicles themselves look as if they're very poorly taken care of. I couldn't even find a decent information of which bus should I take if I would want to go somewhere, and what is the fare. Those busses have someone (or sometimes two) called "conductor" hanging around in the door, collecting money from passengers. I was terrified to see them hanging like that in the door while the bus were driving quite fast. Well, yes they have now a network of public busses called TransJakarta if I'm not mistaken, but the network was not vast enough to cover the whole city.

Not to mention the streets from hell. The traffic in Jakarta beats the hell out of any traffic I've ever seen in the world. Traffic jams everywhere. People driving with only one or two inches away from each other. The worse of all is the motorcycles. I even said to my friend that they are like motorcycles from hell. They squeezed their way to very small gaps between cars, sometimes even hit our rearview mirrors. They constantly cut your way, so my friend always to be extra careful with them and sometime he even had to hit the brake brutely to avoid collisions. What an experience ... I must say. I sometimes jumped from my seat when suddenly a motorcycle speeding through our side of the cars with just few inches away, in a traffic jam, with their loud noises .... a hell indeed. Andy even told me that be very careful not to hit a motorcycle, since even that you're not the one causing the collision, the car driver would be the one blamed and they could go rough on you asking for money. I said "what the hell .... what kind of people are they ... we're not living in the dark ages are we?" ... and Andy could just shrugged with bitter smile.
Another important thing ... be careful of the food. I got stomachache for 3 days because Andy took me to this food stall that he said very delicious. Well the food was alright ... but I got diarrhea the next day. Well, if you go to this food stall, you wouldn't be surprised why I got the diarrhea. It was a very small food stall, on a pedestrian. Just next to the pedestrian was this open sewer, and guess what ... people threw away trash into that sewer. Not to mention flies everywhere and I could have sworn a saw a cockroach running around. My advice is to stick to the food from restaurants, clean restaurants. It's a bit expensive, but at least your stomach would be safe.

I'll continue with my experience in Indonesia .... more surprises coming from this unbelievable country ... which I don't intend to visit again, at least not in several years until they could improve to be a more civilized country.

I have visited both Indonesia and Malayasia some twelve times and I find your comments degrotary about Indonesia. I am neither Indonesian or Malayasian. Malayasia is a beautiful country and so is Indonesia. Yes, there are cheats everywhere, moreso in Malayasia. I am always robbed in road daylight by taxi drivers in KL. I wrote a letter about this and it was published in Bernama news. The Police in KL do not do anything about this. They are complicit with the taxi drivers. Malayasia is also equally dirty as Indonesia but you must take into consideration that Indonesia has a poputaion ten times that of Malayasia. Remember Malayasia is the sister country of Indonesia. So whether you are from Malayasia or Indonesia there areare great number of commonalities between both countries, including language etc. Corruption in Malayasia is dominant. Concerning Indonesian or Malayasain girls, both are preety in the same way. Your biggest problem in Malayasia is the turn coat, Anwar Ibrahim, a suspected CIA agent, who wants to destablize your wonderful country, with the help of the CIA, Interpool, FBI among others. If you poeple hate Indonesia and its' people so much, why dont you go to Singapore and share the tress there and be counted as third class citizens. I have traveeled the world over and over and it is sickening when another citizen from a sister state makes disparaging remarks.

NEP: You should goo back and read the economic policies of the Canadaina government. We pay a high tax but we enjoy a very high standard of living. We were voted the best country to live in for the five of the last seven years. Why? because, we have very good facilities, universal health care, social services that is only rivalled by Sweden, excellent Police services, accountible offices to oversee Politician spendings etc.
Yes, we have a minority government..but this is what decmorcacy is all about...but the Harper Govt cannot uniterally make decisions without Parliament approval. Personally, I am not a suporter of the Harper Conservative, but they have been doing a very good job, in protecting the economy. This year alone the Canadian dollar improved by 23 % against the US dollars. Tell me which other country in the world that has achieved this?... not even the EU?
So go back to the books and internet and research before you make stupid and unfounded remarks.
Ralph:
I salute the Malayaia government on their achievement in the space industry. It is a major step for a Muslim country.
For Malayasians to attack Indonesians or vise versa, is infantile. GROW UP!!!

Indonesia 27/11/07 - Informations voyageurs "Travel Update - UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office We advise against all travel to Central Sulawesi Province and Maluku Province, especially Ambon. my comment is jakarta is not Indonesia and Indonesia is not only Jakarta. so for me it's really ridicilious to give the reason to not visit Indonesia just because you've been visit Jakarta. if I take that kinda logic then Im not gonna go to US because the number of crime in detroit is high or Im not gonna go to malaysia because in kuala lumpur some Indonesian tourist;diplomat;student got a bad treat from police or RELA. after reading your posting. I would say that you're too over react. I've met many foreigner in here. most of them said the same thing like the traffic jam, the food, the garbage. I admitt it that Jakarta (Not Indonesia) is not a good city. but I have to disagree some point you said. not all place were like that. and about the beach. not All Indonesia beach are dirty. yes the beach is dirty in north jakarta but if you go to pulau seribu which is still part of jakarta you'll find one of the great beach. about the food. I dunno where's your friend bring to but. you don't have to go to the expensive restaurant.it's funny since I also used to bring a malaysian person & my friench buddy to eat in traditional place to eat beside the road and they were ok. probably it just not your day or you have a weak stomach. anyway Im agree with what ralph say. about the traffic. yes it's bad in here but it's not the only one. there's many places who has a bad traffic like in here example in brazil & italy. it's not my personal opinion but I get this information from my brazilian & italian buddy who's in here. they said that they have no problem with the traffic in here. also, I agree with ralph. if you're really looking for something fresh. you should go outside jakarta.

malaysia or indonesia are a part of each other. The way of our lives are quite similar, so is the thought. Most of our people are still in the era of our previous conquerer even though we proudly says we are modern. To change our way of life needs time, patience and a lot of understanding. We are just surfacing into a new identity...independence.... give ourselves time to complement each other.Lets join hands in bringing our future together to a more meaningful relationship as part of growth intellectually, economically and spiritually. If we are looking for defaults, we can find 10 easily but to search for goodness, we hardly sees one.Stop looking for disharmony. God created us so that we can get to know each other, learn about one another and cruise through a journey towards excellence now and hereafter. Come on my brother and sister....clean our thought and desire. lets go towards friendship and brotherhood.
