I'ts hard to say some Icelanders don't like America, some do. I have nothing against America. However I have to say I don't like Bush.): Do most americans support Bush? maybe you can give me an answer.

Like your own political leaders, our leaders are elitist. They care little about the common man and are more concerned with their own lives. My vote for Bush was really a negative vote for others whom I felt were less competent to lead. It didn’t matter who was in office during 911, terrorism is am emerging threat to the world…Icelanders need to be aware of threats to their own country, and not learn from the mistakes that France made.

I would say most Americans think that Bush is more than incompetent. I am surprised that someone would give a "negative" vote for Bush. I can't think of a worse president, not even Nixon. We in the U.S. are under a greater threat of terrorism because of our overseas policies which are primarily determined by our international business interests. Terrorism is not just a general threat against everyone. There is reason that it has been targeted against the U.S. in particular. Whatever happened to the "peace dividend" that was supposed to materialize after the end of the Cold War? This money was supposed to be used to support peace, goodwill, and democracy around the world. If our country's policy makers had actually done that, there wouldn't be such a grave threat from terrorists now.

America and Iceland... The relation between the to countries has been strong the last 50 years due to the American Nato Base that was here. Iceland is the most "Americanized" country in Scandinavia. America is a beautiful country, I my honest opinion your political system stinks, I dear say most of your politicians are corrupt in one way or another, your crime rate is high and double moral seems like the standard on all levels. The "greatest country in the world" blah blah arrogance is getting very old. You can say I both love and hate America. Your politicians and foreign policy is controlled by your country's need for oil to cover an extreme consumption and is sure to lead your country into many more wars. American intellectuals, artists and authors are among the greatest in the world.

We lived in Iceland in the 80's and had the greatest family life ever. It is ashame that the NATO base has closed. Bush was selected by the Supreme court, not voters. Then cheated in 2004. Like the Dixie Chicks, I am ashamed of the jerk that occupies the White House.

...most americans that ive spoken to about iceland tend have a very negative view of the country- in large part due to fischer and a perceived holier than thou attitude. they choose to grant citizenship and celebrate an anti semetic fanatic who celebrates the murder of innocents, and clamors for more - but hes a chess great and bashes america, so its ok? it makes iceland look a country and people not to be taken seriously.

I am wondering what Icelandic people think of when they think of America?
I am wondering because my friends and I fell in love with Sigur Ros about 4 years ago and soon after found out what a beautiful country it was. We recently finally saw a film that took place in Iceland, "Heima" (Sigur Ros' tour all over Iceland with images of nature in Iceland). We all would one day like to live there because it seems that everything there is in a different light-- more real, pure, human. It seems like a place where people live the way we are meant to (is this true?).
Also, I want to say that most people in America do not like George Bush, haha.

i terrorized iceland for an entire summer. great country. people are reserved, but buy them some beers and they'll open up to you. they were fascinated by my heritage and appearance, many were delighted to know that i was mexican for some reason, i guess i don't fit the bill for the average mexican since im not fat, greasy, and am incredibly handsome.
alot of icelandic people are scared or wary of people with dark skin, but shit im from baltimore so i sympathize with them. icelanders think we're all fat asses who are lazy and obsessed with television. they think we are arrogant and decadent. we are though. many would like to visit places like new york or LA but wouldn't stay. if your black.

I was at the NATO base in Keflavik from 10/99 till 10/2000. I fell in love with the country during that time - and found the people to be very friendly! I went back for 3 weeks vacation in the summer of 2006 - experiencing the same, although I didn't feel great about being from the U.S. since they (current government)had decided to close down the base at Keflavik. One of the workers - maybe the owner, at Olsen Olsen in Keflavik told me that most Icelanders realize that it is not the Americans (tourists / visitors) who are at fault - but rather the U.S. Government. Personally, I love Iceland - and I think that they have it right when it comes to hard-working, energy conserving, environment-caring people!! We should learn from them in this regard! I am going back this summer (2008) and I can't wait!! The absolute beauty of Iceland is something I will never get tired of!! Iceland and Icelanders really have A LOT going for them! I hope that I can go back there often!

Iceland and The US have so much in common. Both our economies are crumbling for starters. Hey, I know, maybe we can race ´em?! See who collapses first. Wouldn´t that be neat?
and by the way, John - Olsen Olsen rules!

Icelandic economy is going through some rough time just like the US economy but it will recover, it always does.
And I hope I am not mistaken when I say that most Icelanders don't have a certain opinion on "Americans" as a nation, since each individual is different from the other. Religious fanatics and right-wing hardliners (like Bush) usually aren't attractive to most Icelanders though.
