Hi Sarah
I only just read your comment and wonder if you know of any primary schools Which instruct in English. We are looking to relocate to Hungary and would like our sons aged 6 and 7 to go to a bilingual school.

Hope you've gotten settled by now? Would you happen to know if they are allowing US Space-A PAX into Papa yet? We have a resort timeshare on Lake Balaton, HU, in October and would like to fly into Papa. Where do the US flights mainly originate, if we wanted to catch one.

Thank you and enjoy your tour in Papa....

Hi there,

I have seen on this site, that there a couple of people who consider moving to Hungary. I know a family who are planning to rent out their house just 15km from Papa. It's an ideal location for people with little kids, as its the last house in the street with spacious garden and peacful road. The dentist and the doctor lives just 1 street away. Its very easy access to Papa and to Gyor (which a bigger town than Papa). The house is in very good condition, has 2 double bedrooms, 1 single room, open plan kitchen/dinning room. It has two garages and a big driveway. The garden is full of flowers and fruit trees and has a wooden summer house. The owner's son speaks English, which is helpful.
If anyone is interested I can give further details/ pictures trough e-mail.

Anyone from Papa,
I may be taking a job on the air base some time late this year and next year. My wife is concerned about moving not only to a foreign country but a small town in a foreign country. Is it reasonable to think that I could commute from Gyor to the Papa air base for work each day? How is the rail system? The drive?
We have a 6 month old and my wife would be home with her durring the day and would rather be in a larger city with a nice appartment where she can be comfortable, particularly durring the cultural transition. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Hello Wiseman, I just read your note. Have you finally moved to Papa or Gyor? I live in Gyor myself, have two kids and just know exactly what your wife feels, as experienced it myself a couple of years ago, when we moved to Los Angeles for my husband's MBA. My younger one was only a couple of month old... So I would like to offer you my help (if you still need any) here in Gyor, personally or via e-mail or phone. You can reach me at 'ikobzos@hotmail.com'.
Please if anyone else needs help in Gyor, feel free to contact me, too (housing, english speaking school, english speaking doctors, baby sitting, etc.)

Hi Mike, I went to secondary school to Papa a couple of years back. As far as I remember the base there is quite small, they definitely didn't have housing or stores available on base a couple years ago. I don't know how much it developed since. My advice is to check with your employers before you decide to go. The nearest bigger town is Gyor, which is 45km ago, and has much more things (english school, english speaking doctors). If you don't mind commuting and decide to look for a house between the two towns, please see my comment on 05.08.2009. If not or you just need some info about Papa, drop me a mail and I will try to help you.

Hi Mike,
My family been here in Papa since July. I have a 9 and 5 year old. Papa is a smallish growing community. The base is quite small and does not have housing, shopping or schools.
There is a primary school (grade 1-8) here that is focused on the international community where most of the staff speak some english and most of the teachers are pretty good. The classes are taught in both Hungarian and English and the teachers make a wonderful effort to help the children with the lessons that are in Hungarian. Kindergartens here are for ages 3-5 and some english is spoken but at that age the kids learn Hungarian so fast it is amazing.
Housing is different than what you are used to in the States. They are generally smaller but there are a lot of new homes being built for the purpose of renting to foreigners.
We have two large supermarkets, Tesco and Interspar where you can get just about anything you need. There are things that just are not available here (cream soups etc) but if you are not too intimidated by experimenting in the kitchen you definitely won't starve.
I hope this information is helpful.
