The interesting point in all this is that if "Haitians" really defeated the French instead of Malaria (the true victor),why would "Haitians" pay the French if they proved they could defeat them?

Sort of like the 5 de Mayo in Mexico where a small group of French soldiers were "defeated" by a much larger group of Mexicans yet shortly afterwards the French sent an army that beat the Mexicans and took Puebla.

Also the American Revolutionaries "defeating" the British empire ,lead by General Washington who never won any real battles and who's army was freezing ,starving and ready to surrender until the French army and Navy joined the battleforcing the British who would have swept the floor with the colonials to defend against a real power.

History is full of fairy tales and everyone like the David and Goliath story but in almost every real life case David would have been destroyed .

Haiti's whole premise is based on this fantasy of defeating the French when any serious analysis of the events show other events played into Haitian hands but when faced with a French blockade and French armies nearby the Haitians knew that luck would not always be there so they negotiated.

This case if real would be the only case where the "defeated" nation set the conditions and the "victor" had to bow their heads down and accept it but logic states this was not the case and afterwards Haiti (without the French) slowly sank to the level of any other West African state while France continues to be one of the principal nations of the world .

And then Haitians Like to Fool Themselves saying that They Liberated us...

Not only did they not beat the full power of France but they were subsequently beaten over and over by hicks from the eastern part of La Espaņola ,so following this twisted logic of theirs Dominican Criollo and Mulatto peasants defeated multiple times the army that "defeated " the French so our peasantry was on par with the most powerful armies of the time!!

Of course we don't believe this because we are realists and love our country notwithstanding its shortcomings and will fight to the death when provoked.

Worse of all their "liberation" of the eastern side was a blood soaked march in which every living thing was destroyed by their savage "armies" and the pigs were raped and the women killed (or was that the other way around?) and for this kindness they have earned our eternal "gratitude"

As the old saying goes "with friends like these who needs enemies?"

Read the Book Written In Blood, a History of Haiti from 1492 to 1995 by Heinl and Heinl. Yes, they did defeat the French, and promised to do so again. Were they aided by "yellow fever"? Yes. Was the war for independence truly a war with battles, generals, strategies, negotiations, etc. YES. Resoundingly so. Dessalines, Louverture, Christophe. None of them were slouches in military or political terms (though not necessarily nice guys either). The French occupied, colonized, tried to hold, failed, were militarily defeated (Napolean sent both Leclerc and Rochambeau as top generals, and both failed.)and the French suffered the fate of nations who imperialize to the point of blindness. They sent arms and armies as well as the navy. They purchased arms to fight there. They fought on too many fronts and assumed the blacks in Haiti would allow themselves to be subjugated. Wrong. They fought a war of liberation and attrition, and were willing to continue as long as the French persisted. The Haitian monetary debt was a French extortion plot - pay us and we won't invade again. The Germans did the same in Haiti later. War is war. Disease and war work hand in hand. I'm sure the Haitians never mourned the French who saved them a bullet or blade by dying of the fever. All the while the armies fought, the Haitian commanders worked hard to know the number of French dying of the fever so that the next battle might be planned. The French squandered their blood and treasure in Haiti.

Listen buddy, Haiti didn't exist in 1492, first of all... You owe your freedom to YELLOW FEVER... The french lost 15,000 men to it in the first two months of the expedition; thats more than half the foot soldiers sent there.... The french didn't try again because they fear dying of YELLOW FEVER not at the hands of the Haitians... Also since you were so hot and brave, how come you lost to the Domincan Peasant who fought with rock and machete's???

well if we want to get serious about this, the French were expelled by the slaves of Haiti who rose up & fought for freedom. It was I believe the first successful slave rebellion in recent history. All other countries who still supported slavery immediately shunned Haiti. There are few, if there are any, nations in this world, who do not have blood on their hands for their past transgressions. We can not hate the French for using slavery, they were ignorant just as most other nations were in that day and age. But now we all know better.( Don't we??)

well, all i guess you can say is the french left....probably too scared to face the Haitians....and they didn't come back...sounds like they were beat to me....they probably were expecting another country to show up and help them fight their battles for them...just like pretty much every other conflict they have ever been in...oh well, is that what this post is for...to choose sides?? I'd choose to stand by the Haitians anyday. Their efforts to free themselves started the ball of freedom rolling for a lot of oppressed people ... more power to them

The french left cuz they had no resistance against YELLOW FEVER. I understand why you would choose to stand by the myth that created your country, I am aware that it is an emotional issue, but nonethelest, Haitians should start looking at their histor more Empirically, which is what my obeservation is all abot...

Let me ask you lets say that all American Troops in IRAQ catch the SWINE FLU and died within a month, can you say that Iraq defeated America???

Pardon me but did you say "FREE THE WHOLE ISLAND" I guess Dominicans most have been bored or something to have to go to war with haiti... The HAitian occupation was so nice and peaceful we must have been bored to have wanted you off our side of Hispaniola... Never mind abuse... THAT DIDN"T HAPPENED... RIGHT?
