Bravo to the writer of this article! Having made 50 or more trips to Haiti and spending a lot of time there, you've hit the nail on the head.Being involved with the negotations for the release of two friends, one of whom was shot,I can tell you that conditions are worse than you have been allowed or able to describe. Pres Bush, please hear their plea and ease the deportation status for now. People there depend thru little of their own, on their friends and relatives hrer to eat one meal a day

President Bush should grant President Preval's request. He can do so through executive action. No congressional approval is necessary. It would be a modest gesture for the U.S., but a great help to Haiti.
That's right...let's make up humanitarian reasons as to why everybody from every third world country should be allowed to stay here.
We cannot keep taking on the burden of importing all the worlds poor.
It's getting ridiculous and it needs to stop.
For those who advocate taking in everybody from every third world country...just how many people do you think we can accommodate here?
What country is willing to take on all of our citizens when our resources are dried up and we have nothing left?
We've got to shut the water off now or we'll never be able to survive any longer as a country.
We're easy prey because of our compassion to those who are less fortunate.
Our compassion is destroying us...we're being taken advantage off.
What is being done in these countries to end the corruption and injustice these people are running from?
These governments need to be held responsible and their people should be fighting those injustices at home...instead of demanding rights in someone else's home.
The illegals sneaking into our country by the hordes to escape the injustice and corruption in their own countries will never confront those ills at home as long as the U.S. provides them a convenient refuge.

I agree with Nelson. I've been to Haiti only about a dozen times, but I know the poverty and dispair. It isn't a big deal to the US, the people are already here and we're still eating three meals a day and our greatest health issue is obesity while in Haiti it's malnutition. It doesn't hurt our image to compassionate.

Never been to haiti but if the poverty there is anything like the poverty I saw in cairo then they could use the help.

It is in America's strategic national interest to grant this request. Haiti is the heir to the first succesful slave up rising in the New World. Because Haiti is near by it is in American interest not to have a humanitarian crisis on our door step. Thus the people of a Haiti deserve help in spite of the failings of their leaders.

Being compassionate is why we're in the mess we're in now.
Everybody is taking advantage of us.
