This makes me wonder if hotel rates will come down to user-friendly levels. Does anyone know?

Hotel rates will sky rocket, thanks to our stupid ignorant politicians trying to raise taxes on the very industry that keeps Hawaii economy running! They will price out the very tourists who themselves are tightening their belts because of the bad shape this economy is. What a dumb idea....coming from a communist led State legislature whose only function is to give themselves a whooping 30 percent pay raise and engage in "under the table" deals with their crony friends, the attorneys, corrupt real estate brokers, corrupt union officals, insurance sleaze bags, corrupt DOE family members getting non-bid contracts totaling $600 Million each and every year. |

OK, let's get the legislature to raise the hotel tax up another notch and maybe it just might kick start the tourist to return. And while they are at it, it seems that an article mentioned about the condition the UH campuses are in and are wondering how to get the funds. Another easy solution for the legislature - just increase all taxes up another percent for everyone. That should take care of things for awhile.

Hawaii is headed for some serious pain. The government, banks, and "downtown" power center have not invested in growing the economy beyond tourism. High tech incubators over the past decades were just smoke screens to fill the pockets of connected individuals. Hawaii's historically low unemployment rate consisted of mainly tourist jobs hence the "brain drain" of Hawaii's finest to the mainland. The next generation IS Hawaii's future and they can't afford even the basics. It will be an interesting DECADE of social pain and I'm wondering if anyone in government is watching out for social instability resulting from this unprecidented economic event. In the past, we had more "Hawaiian Style" but todays generation will not be able to handle this as they were used to instant gradification. I already see news of violence all over the islands.

1 Thanks for the input. Since we live on a fixed income, my spouse and I definitely will have to look elsewhere to celebrate our 56th wedding anniversary. We've been coming to Honolulu for a decade, so the change will make us sad. Hawaii legislators do seem to be begging for tourism to fail. Apparently they have nothing but air in their heads! |

The rest of the U.S., Mexico, and Carribean, et al are offer FOUR NIGHTS if you stay THREE NIGHTS... That's affectively a rate reduction. So, we're not alone on this planet and the whole world is affected--not just Hawaii...

1 Isn't this an accurate statement about "The Rail" as well..? Tourism is declining, retail sales have fallen, jobs are being lost at an unprecedented level--for Hawaii, and "Nero"/Hannemann is playing his (choo-choo) fiddle--while Honolulu burns... This "Rail," will definitely BANKRUPT this city and meanwhile NECESSARY INFRASTRUCTURE(S) will never be built, and TOURISTS are just too savvy/akamai to buy in to a TRIP TO PARADISE on a RAIL! Screw Hannemann and Inouye and their crooked buddies! IMPEACH BOTH OF THE BANDITS! |

Hawaii's hotel occupancy down, Hawaii's roomrates down, net result is double digit less hotel's gross revenue. Cost cutting measures include reduced workhours, layoffs, drop in pay and benefits for all hotel workers across the industry. Hotel owners also take on losses. So why the heck are we doing all this cost saving measures ... and reducing hotel room prices? To try an attract visitors to come. The Hawaii State government employees have not given anything up. Oh! They gave up unfilled positions and took their pay raises. They can't be fired and have double the benefits of anybody. Now, they want to raise the hotel room tax, net result in the Eye's of a Tourist is zero discount ... Go someplace else cheaper! So what's going to happen ... pressure on the hotels to drop prices even further and more layoffs and paycuts by the hotel industry to support our fat and happy State Government workers. At one time we didn't even have a hotel room tax ... Get rid of HTA.

Stayed in Waikiki total 21 days this past year. Great Kamaaina rates but the hotel workers treat locals bad. I gotta be Japanese or Euro for them to be nice.

Our family comes to Hawaii yearly. My husband and I and our three young children feel less and less wanted every year. We aren't the kind of tourist Hawaii wanted and has made it very clear.
We are just the average family who saves up all year to come for a few weeks. We don't blow the money in the expensive stores etc. Hawaii has geared itself for the high end visitor. Now it is biting Hawaii back in the butt |
You are right on that point....so what's the "Kammina" supposed to mean, lousy service? |
we need to fire the HTA

1 Dumb ass locals with attitudes who drive tourists away deserve this economic recession. Stop yelling at tourists learning to surf at Canoes & Queens, they fund your pathetic angry life. |
who would have guessed?
U sound just as angry as the "**** locals with attitudes." Does that make you angry with attitude yourself? You must be living a pathetic anygry life yourself.... |
