As a Hmong-American in my late 30s and living in the US for 30 years, graduate from college, and still continue in graduate school. I have the privilege to work in French Guiana professionally for 4 years. I have questions for a country such as France and its government (or any French out there for that matter).

1) Why is it that the town (or village if you want to call it) of Cacao (Hmong town) is not on the FG map, is not advertise anywhere by local government or mother france, when it is 1 of the top 3 destination sights in France (along with Devil's Island, and the space centre), while all other little "towns" with little significant, smaller, less populations, is always advertise by government...?

2) The Open markets in Cayenne, Kourou, and St. Laurent are mostly Hmong produces and Hmong provision, yet when French advertise and commercialize FG, they ALWAYS AVOID hmong, even when Hmong is the one that draw more tourist, expecially the by the Guyane local government?

3) Hmong French-born generation children are as well educated as Caucasion french, Creole french, yet after almost 30 years in FG, only 2-3 graduated from college level education (reasons- they have French friends connection), expecially when most Hmong kids in FG have very high grades in school? And why is it that ALL Hmong Kids from grades school thru high school, that moved to the US, graduated, if not the top, close to the top of their class and able to enter very prestigeious universities in the US?

I kind of expect discriminations and racist from Guyane, but why is it that I see that from the caucasian french working in FG as government workers as well. The racists and discriminations is so visible in FG, I fell like modern FG is the 50s and 60s in the US. I expected from people with little educations, lack moral, and have a small worldview such as many in FG, but why those that work for French Government from the mother land too.

anyone, including, French, please share a thought about any of the above subjects.

I grew up in the little village og Cacao. In fact I still have family down there. It's been 11 years that i've lived in the US. I don't know how much it has chnaged, but I remember, that we cared most for our village, even though it is not known to the map.

Hendi Kaf,
You need to do research well before you go...too many "red tapes" - not good for business yet at this time, my opinion. No business yet.

#1 -Business"Licenses" takes months & even up to a year or so, foreigners lonnnnnnnngerrrrr
-ZERO export/import in FG, even though it is an oversea territory of Mother France
-Mail literally take between 2 - 6 months, if ever arrived
-bearaucrats are a class in itself, foreigners are not much more than dirt
-Everything worked under the table (FG being a territory of FRANCE)
-French HATE American, PERIOD!
-Cost of business in FG between national & foreigner (US citizen): 1 to 18
My own expereinces:
1. To small a market
2. 90% of the land is untouchable (that mean no more developement in any form)
3. The 3 BIG "future" all failed; gold, fisheries, and forestry

If you really thinking about real business in FG, please do detail research first. Right now, invest in a country that have one highway, 6 gas stations, 5 banks, one airport, the 5th largest city have about 900+ populations, all its population rely totally on mother france (thru the Space Centre), and 2 McDonald (only rich people can enter w/red carpent, is not too wise, i think.

Cacao is my childhood home town.
I went back to visit in 2004 and 2005.
There is a very small neighborhood occupied
by a few French families, nicely gated and
well maintained. There is a sign at the main
gate that says: " Interdit au Public "
We are well known there for source of
tourist attractions, but the fascination
only last as long as we remain "primitive"
in their eyes.
Regardless, I love FG, but that's probably
because I once lived there and have memories.
Feel free to email. I have tons of pics!
