"Hmong Vang Pao" is not a reference to the General Vang Pao.

It is a reference to the rituals and nuanced spiritual beliefs of a Hmong clan or tribe. Spiritual, marital, and other rituals and practices vary slightly from clan to clan. Hmoob Vaj Pov, anglicanized into "Hmong Vang Pao," is the self-ascribed name of one such clan and long preceded the General.

Heaven forbid! now Americans have elevated General Vang Pao to the status of deity for the Hmong!

You are right about the slight variance in spiritual and ceremonial practices regarding Hmong clan designation. But in this case, I do believe the reference of "Hmong Vang Pao" is a direct reference to the General. Why? Because as you well know, there are any number of clan living in the US, namely MN, not just the "Hmoob Vaj Pov" clan. For example, the "Hmoob Vaj Ntxhoo", anglicanized "Hmong Vang Song" possibly of the Vang clan. So to infer that the comment made meant only the "Hmong Vang Pao - Vaj Pov" clan is living in America is incorrect. It is more probable that the comment made did in fact mean all the Hmong of every clan the General lead or paved the way to America, not just the "Vaj Pov" clan.

fyi - Americans and even some dessident Hmong may not perceive the General as a deity, but I assure you many Hmong do look up to him, even to that stature.
