Copernicus was never under German guidance. He and his whole family fought against the Teutonic Knights and were devout Catholics. He and his family would not have done that if they were German. Martin Luther hated Copernicus because he was a Polish-Catholic. Martin Luther hated Polish-Catholics as much as you do. |

Kopernik graduated from the Jagiellonian University and then went on to the University of Bologna. Chopin was a graduate of the Warsaw Conservatory. |
||||
Also don't forget that even Copernicus' enemies referred to Copernicus' Polish ethnicity when they wanted to diminish him. Martin Luther attacked Copernicus' Polish ethnicity when Copernicus rightly stated that the Earth revolves around the Sun. Martin Luther also thought that all of the Polish schools Copernicus went to diminished him and his belief that the Earth revolved around the Sun. Martin Luther basically disliked Slavic people, especially Polish Catholic Slavs like Copernicus. |

1 That name was chosed to represent the EU Space Program, not to promote Poland!! Talk about being narrow-minded; that must take the biscuit!! Can't the Poles understand that names have different spelling and pronounciation from country to country? Warshawa is called Warsaw in English, and Varsovie in French for example. What's the big deal? They should be happy that one of theirs was chosen to give his name, but no, bitch, bitch, bitch....moan, moan, moan ... No wonder Poland is an object of ridicule in the EU!! Geez .... |
|||
No it was a little more then just a name thing. There are attempts by some Germans to say that Copernicus was German. And speak about bitching, Russians like you bitch all the time! This whole thing about your whining about this "US conspiracy to invade Russia with East European Nato allies" was one big Robespierre Russian bitch fest! You were just going on and on and on and on about how the US and Eastern Europe were on the verge of invading that poor poor defensless 2000 pound gorilla on steroids named Russia! You would never shut up about that, despite all attempts to tell you that it would be insane for the US and NATO countries to ever invade Russia and "steal its resources" which you were always whining about. You would never shut up with that because it was just so much fun for you to whine on behalf of Russia and against America and its allies. But at least recently, even you had a moment of sanity where even you admitted that it would be IMPLAUSIBLE for the US and its East European allies to ever invade Russia (which I have been trying to pound into your thick head all along). Hopefully you will maintain that mindset, unless of course the "Russia is the victim" urge overcomes you and prompts you to go on ranting and bitching how the US and its allies are on the verge of "getting Russia". |

Why do you keep insisting to introduce Russia in any conversation? The topic here is Poland's reaction to the EU choosing Copernicus's name to represent the European Space program. What this has to do with Russia, I don't know... Can't you stick to the subject, or does your mind has to wander towards Russia all the time? Is that a Freudian slip? Also, have the US, NATO or gorillas any relevence in this discussion? Surely not!! Stick to the subject!! |

It is simply lack of respect to alter someone's name. Polish people are not respected abroad and the western world can't stand having a famous scientist to be of polish origin. Maria Sklodowska-Curie also had to insist (While she was alive) that she was Polish because the French tried to turn her into a French. Even now the Polish part of her last name is often omitted.
If your name was Cole and you went to live in Poland, no one would start calling you kapusta (that's the Polish word for Cole), but you feel entitled to alter a Polish name to your liking? There are usually two reasons for that: one - to make it more convenient to pronounce because simpletons are too lazy to try to say it right, and two - to try to change the person's nationality. Wouldn't it be nice if Copernicus was German, Maria Sklodowska-Curie and Chopin - French, or the Polish Pope - ah, the Polish pope. Can't deny he was Polish, so to show their disrespect, Germans used to call him not simply the pope, but the Polish pope. |

1 In France, Marie Curie is considered French and her Polish name never mentioned at all, I can tell you!! As for altering people's name, it's done constantly, if only because some names are just unpronouceable in some languages, or the spelling gets wrong all the time. Many Polish names in France get "francised" (made French sounding) by the people who carry them. French people don't know and cannot pronouce properly some Polish names, and rather than have their name butchered at every moment, amputated or mis-pronounced, some Poles who live in France for a long time have changed their names - very sensible too!! You cannot pronounce SKL... in French! You cannot have more than 2 consonant letters between vowels. Simple as that !! So name that begin by Scz..., or Kzm ... like I have seen, cannot and will not be pronounced properly in French. Get over it ! |
|||
Well then I guess you would have no problem giving famous Russian people anglocized or germanized names and then playing down their country of origin. |

1 In France, we spell Lenin as Lenine, Stalin as Staline, Putin as Poutine, Krutshev as Kroutchev, Peter the Great as Pierre le Grand, Moskva as Moscou. But you can hardly pretend they were/are not Russian!! Marie Curie spent her life in France, married a Frenchman, worked in France, spoke French, was a French citizen, was celebrated as a scientist in France well before she was famous in Poland. It's France which gave her the means to conduct research and become famous; not Poland! Her daughter married a scientist too, and the couple Joliot-Curie were prominent members of the French Communist Party too!! Something else you learnt tonight ... |

1 Can you take a guess why Poland could not give her the means to conduct her research? Take a guess. I'll give you a hint. At has nothing to do with the Polish people and has everything to do with a certain very large predator nation doing something to that part of occupied Poland she lived in. |

But I am sure not all the Poles left Poland when their country vanished from the map, and some even thrived there!! |

The sounds in French are so limited that it seems as if they're sissies talking with their mouths full of food while suffering sinusitis. |

Yes, many people change their names, but they do it out of their own will. Since Copernicus is dead, we will never know if he'd like to have his name germanized. It should be left as it is.

since many polak names are unspeakable, then it´s much easier to change these names to more graspable sound, instead of hearing some mickievitcheski spelling his name for 5 minutes.
since coperko was trained in germany, perhaps these germans should have the right to call him however they wish. |
