I do not understand why should Latvia adapt Russian language officially ? The Russian minority in Latvia are welcomed to speak it, teach their children, I assume, but to make it official ? Who wants to learn this language of kholkhozniks ? What good is it in the world of business ?

It is good to understand russian because then you know what the dishonest sneaky russians are up to. Russians took half of Europe easily, because even at political and economic conferences they speak their russian jargon, and plot to fick everybody over and over,m and no one can understand them in their twisted dialects. In a twist of Irony, although russian was always spoken in Ukraine by ruling russians in their fast lingo and jargon, so the the ukes didn't know what the f.. was happening , the favourite russian trick was to appoint a Georgian like Stalin to lead them in Politics or a Pole that spoke such poor russian that even russians didn't understand what he was speaking. So when Stalin said in a speach" millions of russians will die" it sounded like millions of russians will fly, when talking about WWII war efforts . So... no it is good to learn and know russian in Latvia for that reason. I listen all the time to those russian miscreants, and they are plotting all the time to F somebody or some country over.If you live with a thief and a murderer , you must understand their language. Ukes know this well and listen to russians closely.A word to the wise.... Latvia.

Nationalism, close borders, no freedom = Poverty and tragedy. For the country who want be leader, minorities are big plus. Ex USSR countries and Russia need to join EU, and EU need to become common country.

You know, modern and I'll even say global problem in Latvia today is not only Russian language suppress, far from it. In fact, working currently myself for an executive search firm I personally can say that sharp unification of Latvian language at open nationalistic accord on Latvian authorities' behalf now hardly strikes Latvian citizens searching for a well-paid work in Europe. Last week here was one of "modern" Latvians of alike - 23 years... well, what should I do now with a resume of a man, who has slung the bat to tell me biography of his life in English, what?? So see no good in all that nationalistic course of Latvian authorities. Absurd. And I'm speaking not about Russian language in particular, I repeat. That is a serious problem for educational system in Latvia on the whole - instead of supporting it they spend too much money for ideologically motivated projects aimed at their cultural and language unification... As a result Latvians turn to be absolutely uncompetitive in European labor market...

Pesky, Russian kolkhozniks don't want and don't need to join EU last time I checked...you'll get a lot of arab and turkish fellahs instead , so forget russian kolkchozniks and enjoy life togeather with those guys- and good luck with that, relax and take the pleasure (as it is the only option for you in this situation, right?).

Finland grants the mere 6% Swedes in that country the status of their mother tongue as an OFFICIAL language -- not equal to Finnish, but official nonetheless. Canada grants this right to 21% French speakers.
Latvia denies this right to 32% of its population who speak Russian as a mother tongue. Those Russian speaking people have nothing to do with "occupiers" even if there had been an occupation in 1940s carried out by people who were adults then, i.e. they would be 90years old now.
And by the way, Riga was a RUSSIAN city in the 18th century already, so there is no way Soviets "occupied" Latvia, they reclaimed a part of the Russian Empire that was snatched away during WW I.
Anyway, it is a matter of democracy in Finland and Canada versus tyrany in fascist Latvia.

Nonsense, it's up to the country in question what they accept as their official language, no one elses business, but theirs. There is no Canadian language, so they can choose whatever official languages they want without offending anybody.

Someone from a country that has the lowest ranking on Freedom House's annual survey of each country's political and social indicators, is attacking a democratic nation with the survey's highest ranking. By the way, how is your occupation of Tibet?
