Ethiopia's ancient church must compete with evangelicals

“Even though a difference in dogma exists, we all worship the same God”

As Ethiopia enters its third millennium, so does its Orthodox church, a venerable state-backed institution whose dominance is increasingly threatened by a myriad of evangelical faiths. via Middle East Times

I don't think that Orthodox church is threatened by a myriad of evangelical faiths since God can't be challenged by Satan. Truth always prevails, & Orthodox Twaehedo Church is the truth.
There is no Ethiopia without the Orthodox Church. If the church disappears, & then It is the end of the world.

You always claim that what is Amhara's or Tigre's is the best. You claim that Orthodox Tewahedo Church is the truth. You are very wrong!!! The truth is the Protestant religion. How lucky am I that I don't have the Orthodox religion. People are discovering the truth: Jesus Christ and the Orthodox Church will become empty in the near future. This is the reality.

I am Eastern Orthodox, but I do believe that the Ethiopian Orthodox Church will survive.

Protestantism is divided into 34,000 divisions (denominations). This is the reason why it is a dying religion not only in America, but throughout the world. In Orthodoxy, there is no religion, but there is only Christ.

Oh jeah? Is there only Christ in the Orthodox religion? Who believes in Gabriel, George, Mary, etc. They have portraits made of gold put in a box made of wood. They carry the wood on their head and say sometimes that it does not want to move. What foolish! They also bow for this piece of wood. I have never seen such a foolish religion as the Ethiopian Orthodox religion. But in the protestant religion there is only Christ besides God.

Sir you call The Orthodox Religion foolish, which shows that you really know nothing at all. Before you start to critize someone's religion I suggest that you study that faith and know what you are talking about so that you can intellegently discuss the finer points of the faith that you do not agree with. You mention about bowing down to a peice of wood, do you really know what the faithful are doing? Do you know what that peice of wood represents. I do not see people doubting your faith, you should leave others alone.

I totally agree, it is just so maddening to see such a great faith being critized by someone that does not even know what they are talking about. I am Catholic but feel extremely close to the Orthodox because their long history, and Apostolic foundings. We (Catholic and Orthodox) share a common faith that is closely linked, more so than the Protestant faith. I certainly wish only the best for the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.

God said not to make portraits and to worship them. Why do the Ethiopian Orthodox people worship them then? Tell me why they put that piece of wood on their head and sometimes say that it doesn't want to move. They rest for hours and hours until that piece of wood agrees to move. Isn't this silly? I feel sorry for Oromo people who are followers of the Ethiopian Orthodox religion. But they can't do anything about it as the Amhara colonizers imposed upon them after the colonization of Oromia.

The only truth is the Bible not man made doctrines or earthly denominations. Jesus said....

(John 14:6) Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

No, no. You don't know anything about the Ethiopian Orthodox church. If I were in Ethiopia, I would be persecuted by the Ethiopian Orthodox church for calling their religion foolish and saying that what they worship is a piece of wood.

WOw you realy are talking none sense now, That wood they are carying is the word of god the replica of the ten comandments, which ethiopians have the real one and i know you know the story about that, How do you support protestsnt relegion, its a Shanta religeon, meaning it came from white man and they coveretd you, if you are so proud of your Oromo religeon you would not imbrace the whitemans religeon which made changes to degrade the black man and convert them. I know the oromo people who are protestants come from the Arsi region , maybe your from there, Ethiopian Orthodox faith is the first christion faith there have been no changes to benefit any person or people, it is worshiped as god intened it to be.

You are right God said not to make portraites to worship them. The truth is we(Orthodox religion) worship God's portrait not whitman's money. The reason we put that piece of wood, as you said, is b/s it is made in God's name, everything in His name (portrait, pictures, hollywater, you name it) has God's power. For your surprise it is not only in god's name but also those SAINTS who secrified their life for him.

Well, it could be the ten commandments that are placed in the piece of wood that the Ethiopian Orthodox religion followers bow down for. Even then, God warns us not to worship anything else except Him. Further, the Ethiopian Orthodox religion followers give a kiss to the church building where the piece of wood is kept or the fence of the church compound. All these are wrong according to the Holly Bible. Why do the Ethiopian Orthodox religion followers walk on the wrong way? Even though the protestant religion is imported to Ethiopia by the white people, it is the right religion. There isn't anything they changed in the Bible to degrade us. Yes, I am from the Arsi region of Oromia. But there are very few protestants there. Almost the whole population of Arsi is Moslim. Many protestants live in Wollegaa region of Oromia if you don't know. Well, you better accept only Jesus Christ as your savior and convert as soon as possible to the protestant religion if you want to be saved. The Ethiopian Orthodox religion is only leading you to disaster.

You agree that God said not to make portraits and not to worship them. And you know that you are worshiping those portraits (of saints). You are making a mistake. Even if the portraits are made in His name, humans are not allowed by God to worship them. Therefore, the Orthodox religion is wrong. Are you suggesting that we protestants worship white man's money? You are making a great mistake. We did not become protestants because of money, but because we accepted Jesus Christ as our only savior. Follow our example and escape the crime the Orthodox church is doing to you.
