Florida International University: Sugar cane film riles Dominicans

“And people should understand that this is not a problem against Dominicans, but, rather, it is a problem with the government of the Dominican Republic. I saw the Haitian workers there locked up in houses during sleep time.”

A documentary about the living conditions of the children of Haitian sugar cane workers in the Dominican Republic turned into a heated debate Wednesday, prompting the Dominican consul to charge out of the auditorium.

The viewing of Sugar Babies at Florida International University raised tensions among audience members, most of them from Miami's Dominican community. They believe the film, produced by Amy Serrano, distorts the reality of the sugar industry and in particular the Central La Romana, a refinery that's run by the Fanjul family of South Florida. Bravo! Unfortunatly Dominicans are so brainwashed and blinded by their governmental imposed nationalism that they fail to see the truth; that the foundations of the racist Dominican state has made this tragedy possible.

Just like the American South fell because of cotton based slavery, the Dominican Republic will fall just the same, only this time it will be sugar. Maybe 163 years too late.

The irony is how the racist Trinitarios were the inspiration for the Ku Klux Klan, a group that wanted a return to the old plantation-slave system in the south. The difference between the Klan and the Trinitarios is that the Trinitarios won the war. Thats why in 2007 we still have slavery in the Dominican Republic.

***When you add some proof to your statements you might actually become credible!

Just like the American South fell because of cotton based slavery, the Dominican Republic will fall just the same, only this time it will be sugar. Maybe 163 years too late.

***Haitians are flocking to cross our borders and when deported come right back, only an ignorant person would use the term slavery which is demeaning to Dominicans and to the people who really were slaves! As far as falling the only thing that has collapsed is Haiti and if DR does not control the border this may destroy my country as well!

The irony is how the racist Trinitarios were the inspiration for the Ku Klux Klan,

***Documentation ,not leftist drivel from a clearly sick mind! I could never understand the feeble minded who like to pull numbers and fact from the a'holes but when asked for proof never respond or quote another racist and baseless "prophet" .

a group that wanted a return to the old plantation-slave system in the south. The difference between the Klan and the Trinitarios is that the Trinitarios won the war. Thats why in 2007 we still have slavery in the Dominican Republic.

Again with the slavery BS! tell all the Haitians to go back to their paradise of freedom and leave my country alone !! It was the Haitian armies that fought a race based war murdering raping and pillaging a path through MY country and the heroic Trinitarios and our valiant generals destroyed the numerically superior Haitian troops creating our nation that with all it's faults is no Haiti!

I truly hope you are Haitian and not Dominican because it would be a sad event although we have always had traitors.

Viva la República Dominicana Carajo!

You should learn history before you speak up. The Dominican Republic was a very poor colony compared to Haiti. When the Spanish colony got their Independence in 1821, Haiti already was free from the French, and divided in two countries. The northern country was declared an empire and they invaded the new Dominican Republic and stay for 22 years. Haitian leaders wanted the whole Island to pay France for their Independence using Dominican land and taxes. they imposed their own language on the Dominican people.

The DR had no sugar cane mills until the American invasion of 1916. The Trinitarians fought the Haitian invaders before that, and proclaimedc the Independence in 1916. Defeated, in their way back to Haiti, their Army killed 500 women and children that were taking refuge in a church, in the Moca northern town. The Trinitarians defended their land from the invaders. What would you do if mexico invades the USA?

The Haitians were racist. In their Constitution, you have to be of Haitian blood to become a Haitian, you could not acquire the nationality by birth *jus sanguinis." They also kept in their constitution, until 1986, that the Island was one and indivisible, meaning under their rule.

Sugar cane was started by the USA that invaded both Haiti and the DR in the 20th Century. They invaded the DR from 1916 to 1924 and fought Domincan peasants. They changed the legislation and took peasants lands. When they left, they owned 16 sugar mill, owned by 16 American companies in about 1/3 of the country. Dominicans would not work in this mills, so they brought Haitian workers.

Trujillo was the chief of the Army that the USA Marines trained and left in charge of the Army when the left the copuntry in 1924. The USA government supported Trujillo for 31 years.
Dominicans fought Trujillo and many died because of it. I had my brother, sister and father put in prison by Trujillo, our house burned, and later, my father exiled by Balaguer. Look at the largue picture. Dominicans had no Army before the USA form it and train it. You are making judgement about the Dominican Republic, but no once, you mention the invaders of both countries and the owners of the sugar.

Today, haitians that come hear are taken to Guantanamo or sent back. Who is the racist? The Dr4 has more than 2 million Haitians and the public schools and hospitals are full of haitians, for free. The Universities are also full of haitians, and their fees are as low as the ones for Dominicans.

Who is racist?

¡COÑAZO! Both sides are racist, and trying to act like the poor little victim is just stupid on either side, as both the Haitians and Dominicans love to do.

The Haitians are racist because of the fact that the white Frenchmen who kept them as slaves denigrated their Blackness, and made it seem like something negative. Similar to the African-American extremist groups, the Haitians in time developed a strong hate for whiteness after constant abuse, and formulated their own ideas of Black superiority after leading a Rebellion and winning. The Haitians started out hating white, and loving Black, because of what the whites did to them. They are outwardly racist.

The Dominicans are racist because, while the conditions were similar (white Spaniards kept the Africans as slaves), the Spaniard slavers abandoned their plantations on the island before long-term resentment of the whites could develop, but the idea that whiteness was somehow better than Blackness stuck in the minds of everybody in the DR, white AND black, and after years the remaining Spaniards intermixed with the more numerous freed Africans, creating a mulatto nation that valued whiteness and considered themselves white. To be "Black" was to be a poor, uneducated and underpaid worker, in other words a slave, so even tho ~80% of Dominicans are either partially or fully Black (this is a widely and universally known fact, people. Dont come at me wit "no proof, no argument" bullshit), they all consider themselves white and Spanish, vehemently denying their very clear and dominant African ancestry. They are inwardly and self-racist.

@Tony, you takin it too far my brotha. The KKK and the Trinitario Society have no connection, the Trinitarios' purpose was to liberate the DR from the invading Haitians, who took their rebellion to another level and took over the DR after finding out that their Black brothers somehow mistakenly believed themselves to be white.

Pa que quede claro, I am Dominican and PROUD.
