Dominica rejects legislating intermarriage to save tribe

Full story: The Associated Press

The leader of the last remaining pre-Columbian tribe in the eastern Caribbean says outlawing marriage to outsiders can save Dominica's dwindling indigenous population, but legislators are balking at deciding who can marry whom.

Chief Charles Williams has proposed a law requiring ethnic Kalinagos to marry only each other for self-preservation. He also requested that foreigners be barred from living on the tribe's 3,800-acre reserve.

'We would like as many Kalinago people to respond and pair off so that we can multiply and protect the race,' Williams said during a recent news conference. Read more

I totally agree, what's the point of having a reserve for the Caribs if they just bring other people in? it makes no sense, i mean its maybe a little harsh but that's whats necessary to save their race

Jay, you simply can't be serious. It is not only ridiculous, it is also unfair, unjust, undemocratic and extremely impractical.

while i can understand their reasons for this proposal, it seems almost impossible to make happen because what will occur eventually is incestuous marriages and relationships. they dont have enough carib indians in the island to promote this concept. the only way this can happen is if caribs go out and get other island caribs to marry. they already have a problem of interbreeding in the reserve.

If a western country proposed similar the jews media would outrage with cries of "racism" or even "hate".

Be happy that you are rid of such!

Double curse. First the HERESIES of Ellen G. White (or is it maybe Ellen Gay White?) and then gay = abomination that should be put to death - according to God's law.

Another proof that the hyprocrital adventists will have nothing to do with God's law.

May that adventist gay get a good beating right early!

Preserving the indigenous people of Dominica, should be seen as a constructive endeavor to preserving the country's very fragile history. The Kalinagos deserve protection, not only from environmental and other social maladies but from the very subject under review. History reminds us that the fate of the conquered has always been dependent on the intermingling of the races. In light of this position, however, enforcing such law will prove difficult and undemocratic. A viable investment should be to empower the Kalinagos economically and communally through an identity-centered education based on preservation - not superiority or division.

The idea of preserving the race is really a necessary one, however i do not agree a law is whats needed to accomplish this objective;the Caribs children should be educated about the history, their heritage and their values and most importantly their pride of being Carib and their purpose for preserving their tribe, no longer should they be allowed others to label them as wild worthless Caribs as is so commonly called.

While i do think the tribe need to be preserved i must admit that this a loosing battle, the damage has already been done and the Caribs tribe have already been lost and so is the territory.

We just have to preserve this precious culture. The world enforces the preservation of animals on the verge of extinction-lets us save our people, our history.Ignorance is a sad condition-there are few caribs left-do the right thing-you won't regret it.Save them-even if it's just for 20 years.Pass the bill.

We should do what ever it takes to try and save these people. We Africans, more than any one else, should know what it feels like to live with the shame of a lost identity, with the guilt of never it seems, of finding out who we really are. We can make it right by these folks and help them remain who they are. Don't let history record us being responsible for the demise of these people, Please help them now.
