Everybody knows Mecca is the most important city in Islam. Every year, millions of Muslims visit the city to make Hajj and pray around the Kaaba.

Mecca is the center of Islam and the center of slamic worship. But it wasn’t always like this. During the time of Prophet Mohammed, Mecca was the center of idolatry.

Before Islam, people from all over the Arabian Peninsula and beyond visited Mecca on an annual pilgrimage. But this was not for any monotheistic reasons. People visited Mecca to celebrate,
make merry, commit several immoral acts, and worship the hundreds of gods inside the Kaaba.

Without the guidance of Islam, the people of Mecca adopted several barbaric habits. Women during this time had little if any rights. Men could marry whomever they wanted and divorce them
on a whim. Some men even inherited their deceased father’s wives .

This overall disrespect of women was most manifest in the treatment of newborn girls. It was a common practice for some men to bury their newborn daughters alive out of shame.

Slaves in Mecca did not fare any better. There were no rules or restrictions on how slaves were to be treated.

Bilal Ibn Rabah, who would become one of Prophet Mohammed’s companions, was an Ethiopian slave in Mecca. When his masters learned he accepted Islam, he was tortured mercilessly.

Mohammed Ibn Abdullah Becomes Mohammed Prophet of Allah

It was in this corrupt and pagan society that Mohammed received the call to prophethood.

As mentioned in Part 1 of this series, Mohammed married Khadijah, a wealthy widow. They had several children together and Mohammed even took in his cousin Ali Ibn Abi Talib and adopted a slave boy named Zaid Ibn Harith.

Due to its proximity to the Kaaba and the well of Zamzam, Mecca became an important commercial city in Arabia. Mohammad was himself a merchant but would often leave the city to spend some
time in solitude. He would spend several days in a cave in one of the mountains surrounding Mecca.

It was during one of these retreats that Mohammed Ibn Abdullah became Mohammed the Prophet of Allah.

One evening during the month of Ramadan, while Mohammed was alone in the cave, an angel came to visit him. The angel was Jibreel (Gabriel) and was sent by Allah to give Mohammed the
message of Islam.

Mohammed, like most Arabs during that time could not read. He was illiterate. So he replied,“I cannot read.”

But Jibreel wasn’t having that. He squeezed Mohammed even tighter and repeated the same phrase.“Read!”

Mohammed replied once again,“I cannot read!”

A third time Jibreel squeezed Mohammad and again repeated the single command.“Read!”

“I cannot read!”
Jibreel pressed Mohammed a fourth time and recited the first verses of the Quran to be revealed.

“Read in the Name of your Lord who created;
Created man from a small clot.
Read and your Lord Most Exalted,
Who teaches with the Pen,
Teaches man what he did not know.”

hurried home to his wife Khadijah.

Mohammed, thinking he had gone insane, asked his wife to cover him with blankets. Then he
related what happened in the cave.

Khadijah consoled him and told him that there was no reason to worry. After all, wasn’t
Mohammed a good man, who cared for the poor, and kept strong ties with his family? She advised
him to see to an old cousin of hers who was a Christian well versed in the scripture and the
Hebrew language.

She took Mohammed to her cousin Waraqah Ibn Nawfal. He told the old man what happened on
the mountain.
Waraqah confirmed that the message Mohammed received was from the same source as that
received by the Prophet Musa (Moses) may Allah be pleased with him.“I only wish I could live long
enough to see your people drive you out of your home.”

“Will they really do that?” asked Mohammed.

“Yes, indeed! For no one has come with such a message and was not treated harshly. If I live to
see that day, you will have my full support.”

However, Waraqah died a few days later, and the revelation ceased for a while

Prophet Mohammed Declares the Message Openly

At first, Mohammed only shared the message with his closest companions. His wife Khadijah was the first to accept the message of Islam. Then came Mohammed’s best friend Abu Bakr. Other
early Muslims included another friend Uthman, Ali Ibn Abi Talib and Zaid Ibn Harithah.

Eventually, the revelation continued and soon Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) was ordered to spread the message openly. So one day, Mohammed the Prophet of Allah climbed Mount Safa, and
called his people to gather around.

When a large enough crowd had gathered, he said,“Were I to tell you that an invading army was coming to this city, would you believe me?”

“Of course,” they said.“You are Al-Ameen the trustworthy!”

“Then I warn you of the punishment and wrath of Allah if you do not submit to Him.”

“Curse you!” shouted Abu Lahab, Prophet Mohammed’s fiery and abrasive uncle.“You called us for this?” He cursed Mohammed again and threw a stone at him in disgust..The rest of the crowd dispersed leaving the Prophet standing alone.

Despite the cold response, Prophet Mohammed began to preach Islam openly. At first, only the weak members of Meccan society accepted Islam. These first Muslims were primarily slaves or
people with low social standing. At first, the early conversions were generally tolerated and Mohammed was left alone.

But as the movement continued to grow, and Prophet Mohammed began to berate the pagan idols of Mecca, the leaders of the city began to deal with them harshly. The begrudging tolerance
was replaced with outright oppression

The Apostle Paul says that women should be silent in church and learn at home from their husbands.

You think that if you follow the quaran to the letter it makes you more holy, more religious, are you so stupid to think that some all seeing all knowing deity you think created the earth and universe with the blink of an eye but cannot see that what he created could evolve and out grow its so called guide lines for that moment in time? 2. Do you agree with the current practise in your own country where a father killed his own daughter for leaving islam and becoming a christian? Let's not forget that the man was never punish for his evil deed because according to your laws he didn't do anything illegal.
