The NATO issue for Ukraine is long from over. With the closest countries to Russia reviewing security much closer than Germany and France, there will be changes in the future.

Yes, it is heartening that Ukraine is being supported by former Warsaw Pact countries. Ukraine must steadily keep working toward NATO membership and reaching NATO military and security standards. Membership NATO will give Ukriane much needed security against increasing aggressive and extremely disrespectful threats from Russia's neofascist political and military leaders.

It really doesn't matter how many countries support Ukraine's application for membership in NATO. Russia will continue to twist arms and blackmail to get what they want. NATO too close to them? Just the usual paranoid mindset. If they didn't have expansionist goal it would not matter.

NATO members get troubled when russsian bombers excersise in neutral space near their borders. Why should we keep patience when NATO is gathering arms near our borders?
Saddam was a tyran, but Iraq was attacked on the false pretext that he is threatening the world with nuclear and chemical weapons. No traces of which were found in the long run.
What can held NATO from inventing pretexts to attack Russia?
Too much attempts are made to demonize Russia, while the peacekeeping practice of US with its NATO allies arises the questions about compatibility of such "peacekeeping" militarism and democracy.

Unfortunately Russian chauvinism is based on historical Russian imperiialism and expansionism.

So long as Russian school children are taught that Russian imperialism has been virtuous, we can expect Russian supremacist ideologies based on authoritarianism to dictate Russian foreign policy for at least another couple of generations.

Ukraine, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Georgia and other nations occupied by imperial Russia know the Russian chauvinist mindset all too well and have steered a different course --towards Europe, "the West" and the democratic world.

Russia on the other hand has turned to Eurasia and neofascism.

This ideological and cultural divide is leading to inevitable tensions as Russia yearns for its former imperial status which can only be achieved by heavy-handedness and blunt foreign policies such as the recent Russian Gazprom gas wars against Ukraine.

NATO must ensure that Ukraine and Georgia join NATO to curb looming and menacing Russian neofascism and expansionism.

The real problem with NATO is aggresive american foregn policy around the world. Selective support of parts in regional conflicts more resembles attempts to suppress the fire by pouring gasoline in it. Seems like settling peace is neither the primary goal of this policy nor the goal of the authors of the russofobic posts in this thread.
Permanent instability, which follows almost all the military actions of the US administration arises suspicion that this instability is the main goal of the US foreign policy. This instability triggers enormous spendings for the US military industrial complex, which felt short of funding since the Cold War. The situation with funding changed drastically when knew enemies were found.
The more we quirrel here, the more some earn on deaths and arms.
Are you still going to spend you time to feed the hawks?

In March 2004, Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia officially joined NATO.

All these countries want defense and protection by joining other democracies in NATO.

Ukraine is doing exactly what Slovakia and others did by becoming a NATO member.

Why do Russians care about NATO? It is just an American con to trick gullible European nations into sending troops for crazy American schemes around the world like Afghanistan and for waging terror campaigns in the Balkans.
The USA is on the verge of collapse from the miniscule casualty rates in Iraq so they would "cut and run" and "leave their allies in the lurch" at the first sign of trouble with Russia or China.

Very sad comment from someone who owes his freedom to Americans. If it was not the end of the cold war, you would be living in a slave labor camp in Siberia, for just having a computer and posting on the WEB

To all.

NATO is a defensive organization. Get over yourself.

You want to live in China and earn a bowl of rice a day? Go ahead and move there.

You want to live in Russia and have your rights taken away at any time? Go ahead and move there.

But if you cherish the freedoms you enjoy and the rights you believe you earned, then reconsider your views on a military alliance that is protecting you.

NATO is not perfect, they make some mistakes, but they are real and they work for you.

NATO allies put pressure on Russia
By Helle Dale
April 30, 2008

What do you do when confronted by a bully? The first lesson you learn as a child in the school yard is that reasoning and turning the other cheek unfortunately does not work very well, and will only get you a reputation as an easy victim. On the other hand, knocking someone's teeth out because of a mean taunt is not the way to go either. Producing an immediate, proportionate response is a skill you have to learn.

In the schoolyard of international politics, much the same rules apply. Some countries tend to behave like bullies. The more other nations try to accommodate them in the cause of getting along, the more they will bully. The Soviet Union — and Russia today had long history of subtle and not-so-subtle aggression towards its much smaller neighbors — "the garden of the red czars" was one of the names for the Soviet empire and its "near abroad."

Unfortunately for the Russian leadership, many of those smaller neighbors are acquiring new, powerful friends and therefore a measure of protection. Bullies never like this. Three small former Soviet republics, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, are now members of NATO, allies of the United States, Canada and almost all of Europe. Other former Soviet republics are applying to follow their lead, hoping to escape Russian dominance.

...

NATO needs to revisit the question of MAPs for Georgia and Ukraine as soon as possible, in order to reverse the decision taken in Bucharest. Bending to Russian pressure was wrong in the first place, and push-back in just such a measured and responsible form is certainly justified. Who knows, it might even teach the Russian bullies a lesson.
