Two killed in north casino shootout
By Jean Christou THE shooting to death of two men in a brawl over casino debts in occupied Karavas on Wednesday night has prompted a debate over gambling in the north. The Turkish Cypriot leadership has already closed down the two casinos involved and seven people have been arrested. Kibrisli newspaper said that a meeting would take place between Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat,‘Prime Minister’ Ferdi Sabit Soyer, the police and the ‘ministries’ concerned with public order. Sources told the paper that Talat and Soyer were determined to take all the necessary measures in the struggle against the mafia operating in the north. On Wednesday night, the brawl began between the employees of the Grand Ruby Casino and Deniz Kizi Hotel. Reports say it was over a gambling debt incurred by one against the other amounting to hundreds of thousands of dollars. According to Kibris, the owner of Grand Ruby Casino, Yasar Oz gambled at the Deniz Kizi Casino and lost $250,000. The debt was reduced to $200,000 after a deal was struck, but Oz did not pay the money. The administrator of Deniz Kizi Casino, Idris Melih Turgut visited the Grand Ruby Casino with his bodyguards and, after a quarrel, guns were drawn. Musa Cakmak and Huseyin Donmez, who were seriously injured, died later in hospital while a third person, Necdet Kaan Kanmaz, was also injured slightly. Yasar Oz was one of the people arrested, and according to Afrika, had been convicted in the Susurluk case in Turkey. In 1996 in Susurluk, the bodies of an MP, a police chief, a beauty queen and her lover, a top Turkish gangster and hitman called Abdullah Catli, were pulled from a car wreck. In the car authorities found pistols with silencers, machine guns, and false diplomatic passports. Oz served four years because of the Susurluk case, and another 15 years for drug trafficking. Under the headline “Northern Cyprus is a nest of mafia”, Afrika described Wednesday’s shooting as “bloody settling of accounts of Susurluk suspects who made their life in northern Cyprus”. “Who protects them and who made them administrators of a casino?” the paper said. CNN Turk also said Yasar Oz was “a well-known name in the underground world”, and the administrator of Deniz Kizi Casino, Melih Turgut was known by the nickname “Kurt Ahmet” in Turkey. It said he was involved in the incident of the killing of another man in 1993. Afrika questioned previous comments by Soyer that “the doors of the TRNC were open for everyone who wants to conduct business”. “Mr Soyer promised freedom to everyone who ‘conforms to the rules of the democratic law’,” the paper said. Mustafa Akinci, the leader of the Peace and Democracy Movement said the Turkish Cypriot leadership had been warned the north would be “turned into Texas”. |

Kibris.. Shite does not happen...it is caused! and we have all the reasons in TR and in TRNC!...when anybody with a single-cell brain ,along with plenty of fake bravado ,bad temper, unsatisfied basic- human urges ,is given an uncontrolled gun ,with the culture to go with that ,along with massive stupidity and false macho bullshite...this is the result!...i am surprised how many more people are not killed in TR and the TRNC as long as these idiotic inbreds with hallow skulls are allowed to roam the cities, towns and even the countryside!this is the tragedy in Turkey...It seems to me that somebody told these prciks to pull a gun to gain respect, instead of showing; intelligence, articulation and humble civility ...and we,as the majority Turks keep allowing this to continue,we have much more to suffer, everywhere we go,inside and outside TR,and it is at the least embarrassing for me and downright infuriating at most! |

Well to call these people stupid is a bit naive as they are clearly **** rich as the one guy was able to blow a quarter of a million dollars in one night. Obviously some of these people are smart if they are capable of generating these kinds of revenues.

You are right Chris. Cypriots in the south are living in a microcosmos of perfection. They go around sharig their money, their food and cars and everything else. No need of personal possessions and they don't even care about properties either(just the one in the north). The police just sits around having coffee(not far fetched) and everybody is prancing around. No insults no cursing , no hatred(except on this forum)and there is joy, joy, happy, happy everywhere. Are you happy now? Is there such a country in the world. Not even families are that perfect. Wake up, this is not fairy land. You can respect your family and your country but face reality. |

You do take on an interesting role, and you obviously enjoy antagonising the Greek Cypriots, just like my friend Blackadder. I am not sure if you are Greek Cypriot yourself, but it looks to me that the G/C's you might or might not know are not the norm. Perhaps your familly were not forced out of their homes so their outlook may be different from those who have suffered. Most of the G/C's I know, and I have been around a long time, are genuinely sensitive, religious, moral people who love their famillies and fellow compatriots. They have actually lived with T/Cs and can still speak some Turkish. They have experienced hardship and have learnt from this . I am not sure if you belong to a younger generation who does not really speak from personal experience, but make your judgements based on you own views. How can you criticise a race unless you have personal first hand knowledge of their thoughts and activities. Are you possibly expressing your own one-sided views? |

Why is another view, or the truth "antagonising"? With respect, my views are entirely based on personal experience and having lived and worked in Cyprus for many years. Moreover, I still own [legal] homes on both sides. You and other Greeks do not have a monopoly on right and wrong, and whilst I respect your right to express your view, I also reserve the right to challenge what you say. I do not set out to antagonise anyone [apart from the odd facist assholes on this site, but I am sad to say that many GC's are so blinkered on this debate that only blunt speaking gets the point across. Heat and kitchens?? |

Well said. The more we challenge each other's views the better. There are times when you make me reconsider my comments and there are times when you have pointed me towards another angle. This is what this forum should be about- debating the issues without losing our tempers and calling each other names. There are a few bigotted comments and some contributers are downright insulting. I am almost tempted to reply to these in similar fashion, but I would have to call myself Zat or Stone or Ali |

One thing many on this forum fail to understand is that we are all individuals and have our own experiences. As GC's we don't always have to agree with each other and the fact that I suffered through the war of 74 doesn't make me an expert in deciding on a solution for the island. The points Iam making are a combinatiion of Cyprus before, and what I observe and wittness in Cyprus today. I should have the freedom to express myself without worrying being labeled.. I have a hard time associating with people who lived overseas and have been exposed to other cultures an races and still sound so narrow minded and selfish and racist. I do not tolerate ignorance and I am not going to apologize for it. I don't become friends and hang out with people just because we are Cypriots. The integrity and values of a person are the deciding factor to choosing my friends. Why then, should I be forced to behave and talk like the other Cypriots. This debate needs true and honest opinions of individuals on a particular subject and for this discussion to be a success people have to express their own opinions and concerns. How can we learn and communicate if we expect people to tell us what we want to hear? By the way, I strongly believe that if the young genratation in Cyprus were not brainwashed by their parents they could be great objective contributors to the decision making but unfortunately, they are more hateful and racist and less flexible than their parents. My objective on this forum is to inform others of my experiences in Cyprus and my opinions about current issues and if If I hit a nerve along the way be it. It is completely irrelevant who I am and how young I am. |

Let me remind everybody that different perspecttives and new ideas are what companies need to develop and come up with new products. Outside view and idea is what a person needs to overcome its grindlock and last but not least new ideas turn to inventions and help the world evolve (in most cases) and become a better place. Many of us welcome new ideas because they are a must to the development of the mind how come people on this forum dislike everbody who writes and offers a different perspective. Why are the GC bothered so much about my comments. They are not personal and not offensive why not come out of our box and give them a second thought. They won't harm anybody. |

From your first post in all these forums you missed no opportunity to attack the Greek side. Allways trying to find ways to castigate them and especially the young ones accusing them of being intransigent and racists. Of being worst than their parents. Allways putting the blame on the Greek side and allways trying to present your self as an intellectual and superior than the the REAL Greek Cypriots. Not even once you found fault with the Turkish youth or their parents. Just like your soulmate , Blackshitter, you pretend that you are neutral and mentally superior. Well.. I told you before.. Your name should not be Maria which I very much doubt that it is.. You sound more Aishe to me. So just drop the mask and the act and admit of what you are. |

If you wake up early this morning after a strange sexual dream, don't worry. It's just Pluto digging deep into your psyche and it doesn't mean you are perverted. Dreams about sex are almost always about something other than the carnal desires; the language of the sleeping mind is almost entirely symbolic. You are normal, so carry on in good faith.
