Colombia lashes out at Bruce Willis over drug remarks

I am appalled by his arrogance and unfounded comments regarding Colombia, just because he is a movie star, does not give him the right to make a statement like "drug trade = terrorism then Colombia = Iraq", then by the same token, some americans are terrorists because of the large consumption of drugs and drug trade in the streets of the USA!

I'm willing to bet that Bruce Willis does not know much about Colombian culture and much less about the violence going on withing the USA because of the thirst for drugs among so many American drug users. Before judging anyone else, one should take a look within yourself.

Take a look at yourself you village idiot! I have been to Colombia many times and the people are friendly and happy and the culture, music and food there is wonderful. My wife is Colombian and hearing loud-mouthed ignorant and arrogant excuses for men, like Bruce Willis mouth off about issues they don't understand makes her and myself very angry. Perhaps Bruce should stop trying to play hard men in films (as after 9/11 he was the only film star not to fly to do a charity concert to raise money for the victims of 9/11...because he is a gutless coward!) and should start playing more loud-mouthed idiot roles in his American Bravado Bullshit films where America is ALWAYS the hero of the world instead of the reality that America is the bully and the mindless coward of the world who is obsessed with money, oil and power!

columbian people are beautiful people

As an American I am embarrassed by Willis' comments. I have been to Colombia several times. The majority of the people I have met are nice, especially if you take the time to learn some of the language. I think education through international travel is the best way to cut through some this ignorance, although if you only stay at posh hotels and resorts the learning experience is not quite the same. It is amazing that nothing seems to be our fault. I am also amazed that many people think they have the answers without any facts to back it up. Maybe it's not the arrogance that turns off a lot of foreigners...maybe it's just the ignorance. On behalf of all U.S. citizens, especially here in the Midwest, I say "I am sorry" to all Colombians. We are not all like Bruce Willis.

Hooray! You are to be commended! I now have hope for American, Americans and for the future! And I agree, international travel is the best way to conquer ignorance. Don't believe all the lies in the media...go see for yourself and make up your OWN mind!

Most of the natives of Columbia dont do Cocaine, but they do chew the leaves of the Coca Plant. But, the truth is the truth, Many many farmers in Columbia would rather grow Coca plants then Corn (maze). They are payed 5 to 10 times for the same amount of crops then if they grew maze or sugar cane. Im not saying it's right but in a poor country like that, What do you expect. and on the flip side, They're not growing it for other columbians. There is a huge problem in America. Crime can be directly linked to the addictions of Cocaine and Crack Cocaine. People are murdered because the drug is so addictive, that the users are willing to murder people for their money to help support the addicts addiction.

So it's the greed of the Columbian Government that has alot to do with crime in the US and other nations world wide.

No one said that Columbia doesnt have a beautiful culture or friendly people. But they are a thorn in the sides of many countries because they not only are not doing enough to stop drug smuggling, they in many cases support it to help their economy.

America is always critisized for its greed, Why not apply the same guilt towards Columbia.

Bruce is a jerk and a bad actor. Dont listen to him, no one else does.

Bruce Willis does not start out badly when he says that the drug trade is killing us in the US. It is - although it kills some more than others. In California, over 80% of people in prison are there for non-violent drug convictions. Most are African American and Latino. The US government has spent almost 5 billion dollars trying to eradicate coca in Colombia, yet many of those incarcerated don't have access to drug treatment programs to help them break their additions.
The problem is that Willis tries to link drugs to terrorism - which is definitely going too far. The sale of drugs has fueled the internal armed conflict in Colombia by providing lots of cash for recruting and equipping new members in all of the illegal armed groups. But all these groups have roots much older than the current discourse about global terrorism addresses.
If we want to stop the drug trade we should look more at demand-side solutions, helping people break their addictions. If we want to end the conflict in Colombia, we should support the kinds of integrated development programs that can help alleviate the poverty that drives youth to become soldiers and that drives poor farmers to plant coca crops.
