In China, number 8 is a symbol of luck and good fortune. The Earthquake happened exactly 88 days before the Olympic Games. Curious!

My prayers and hearts go out to the families that are loosing loved ones. To the people who make stupid comments here, all I can say is remember how you felt whether you lost someone or not during the world trade towers, these are people, same as you and I, real people with real emotions like you and I. They are in a time that is the worst part of life. Rather than making a stupid comment out of your own negligence, reach into your pocket and send something that will help, get a blanket you dont use get some freinds on board raise some funds to send and help, do something that people will look up to you for instead of people saying that your an idiot. I have been to China many times, also to Sichuan. My wife and stepdaughter are from Sichuan. Last year my wife worked in WenChuan. There she had some friends, coworkers, and a boss whom she liked very much. All communications are down. The outlook for survival does not look good. My wife has been very sad since the tragedy happened. She has a very dignified family in Sichuan. The immediate family is okay, but her ex-husband is a policeman and has been hospitalized after a rescue effort in MianYang. The school has collapsed on his son and perhaps he is now dead. There now are so many children without parents, so many parents without their children.

I agree. That is why a certain percentage of Americans are uneducated about world politics. If you pay attention to any American media source you will see international news and world coverage is 2 minutes of an hour long broadcast.Yet they spend 20 minutes of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt.
People sit glued to the American Idol finale and aren't concerned with anything that takes more than 5 minutes to figure out. We are a nation of instant gratification consumers.

I happen to like Chinese people. I admire them, and other Asians. They are very civilized, polite, intelligent people.
But you have to take off your smug rose colored glasses for a minute, resist your self righteous necessity to call everybody a bigot at every chance you get, and look at the big picture. If it wasn't for the hundreds of earthquakes that have hit China in the last 2000 years there would be 20 billion of them instead of the 1.3 billion there are today. The Earth has to shed its skin every now and then, just like the dragon. And no amount of praying, good will towards others, or the predictable self serving haughtiness is going to stop plate tectonics.

I agree thats why we could afford som really nasty catastrophes in Usa , how about CA down the sea , Yellowstone upp the air, and the rest blows away.

Tsusami, Cyclone, Earthquake, Super-volcanoes -- these are grinned prospect that we as nations on this earth will face at one point in time. Asteriod is an ultimate fate that highly will end our existence.

I think as human we all need to have compassion and unite to help each other in time of calamity, because every human person have a right to "life".
