I'm chinese by blood. My father's family hails from fujian province while my mom hails from guangdong. During the time that china is still poor, our family donated money to build schools in china, and temples there as well. I do not have any hatred for chinese, and i do not forget my roots.

Yet why do i defend the philippines? Because this should not be about Chinese pride or Filipino pride. It's about what is right and what is wrong. It's about mutual respect.

Here in the Philippines, despite all that has happened, we try to understand china and his actions. Well, Do you?

Our media reports everything honestly, both side's views are discussed in detail so that everybody can understand what is right and wrong. China's media on the other hand only tells their citizen that they are right and how abusive and evil filipinos are. Is that the right way to do things? I'm not blaming the ordinary chinese citizen over what is happening, but you people who are reading this right now have access to the internet.

It wouldn't hurt to research a bit and get your facts straight before you throw insults about someone's mother being a whore or calling us little devils etcetc..

The Philippines will be better off if she joins the Chinese Union like Hong Kong and perhaps later on Taiwan.

Forget that we will fight the Chinese for you. The most we can do is to let more of your people immigrate to here.

We, the country as a whole, do not have the will to fight the Chinese. In recent incidents in the China Seas, our spy plane has been downed by the Chinese air force and our spy ship, the USNS Impeccable, was literally pushed out by Chinese 5 tug boat [Click in website - 5 Chinese vessels maneuver near USNS]. Yes, we did protest. A protest and that was it.

Join the Chinese Union and you will have a better future in development, in business, in creating wealth, in bringing peace within your area with your Muslim population. Dreaming otherwise will only keep you in stagnation and enhance your deterioration.

I'll ask you the same...if the reef is China's then how come you let the US use it for navy gun practice?

The reason why your fishermen go to our reefs is because you have depleted all resources close to your mainland coastline. Remember Chinese eat anything and everything.

Do you know that the united states has a lot to gain by helping the philippines? After reading this post, tell me again if you really want us to join china..

Natural Gas. 2.7 trillion cubic meters on one existing site. 4 major areas with potential natgas deposits that i know of, estimates on one site will exceed 2.7 trillion cbm, studies show.

Oil. South china sea disputed area is said to contain large deposits of oil. Majority of deposits are contained in the areas where it should be philippine territory.

Gold, plus resources like copper, nickel, manganese, chromite, molybdenum, etc. the philippines is one of the most richest countries in the world un terms of resources. Rough estimates peg our gold deposits at more that us$1 trillion. Lol. I personally believe there is more.

Location. The us views china as a threat. Because of our location Having a foothold in the philippines means you can have a more secure hold on the south east asian region.

And many more..

I dont agree that if we join china, the philippines will be better off. My experience with chinese culture tells me that filipinos will only be discriminated and will never be part of their society. I'd rather support this government in their campaign to Rid the philippines of the corruption that is sucking us dry. Without the corruption, the philippine economy would have been one of the biggest in asia, no doubt about it.

The Philippines does not want war. We have been talking with the Chinese to resolve is issue peacefully, even to the point of offer joint exploration projects with the Chinese so that both parties can benefit from the resources in the area.

However, China responds by driving us out of our own exclusive economic zone, claiming territories so far away from their shores and right beside ours. See the maps, it's ridiculous.

China is also the one threatening war as what one of their generals said. Filipinos responded by saying that they will defend their country and their territory, and i believe majority of filipinos will do what they can for their love of their country.

Scarborough is the name of a trading ship that sank in the area. The philippines has another name for it and it's bajo de masinloc, meaning part of masinloc, zambales. Zambales is a province of the Philippines. The name was given during the spanish era in the 1700's.
Whether or not the chinese discoved the shoal (because there are other claims that the sultan of sulu is owns the area before and we're talking about some of the original settlers of the philippines), it does not matter. According to international law, discovery of an area does not make it yours. Its like seeing a wallet on the floor and saying it's yours coz you discovered it lying there. The chinese claim that they have been using the area for years BUT international law says that use of an area does not make that area yours as well. Its like using your company's car and saying 'ok this is mine co im the one using it.'
For the island to be yours, there should be, like i said in previous posts, A history on that area, settlement and use of an area, and management over the area. Keep that in mind, bongo. I feel like im teaching a kindergardener.
As for kicking the philippines out of the area, i would love to see china try without getting criticism from the international community. Remember, china is an export oriented economy. Your local consumption of goods is not enough to drive your economy and gaining the ire of other countries will be a big mistake.:) so go on, fire the first shot. I dare you :)
As for philippine-us relations. They will honor our mutual defense treaty if it is needed. They have already reminded us just recently that they are there for us and that the agreement still stands. You see, both our countries respect each other, and i believe that is important in any relationship.
Our relationship is also mutually beneficial, not just one sided, for your information. But his topic is reserved maybe for next time coz this post is too long already.:)
Having a mutual defense treaty with the USA will not mean that they join the Philippines should they decide to declare war on China even if they could be expected to come to the aid of the Philippines if China declared war on the Philippines. After all, where were the USA during the Faulkland's war - protecting their trade interests.

As the name of the treaty implies, mutual DEFENSE treaty. We watch each other's backs, enhance our defenses with each other's help. Us help us with the military hardware, training etc... And the philippines assists the u.s. in combat training in tropical environments (which the u.s. lacked and led to their defeat in the vietnam war), plus the philippines allow the u.s. to have military presence in the best spot in south east asia.

If China attacks us, they will be there to defend us, just as secretary of state hillary clinton confirmed yesterday during the 2+2 meeting between the usa and the philippines.

If it's all about a country's personal interests, the philippines is very lucky then because the united states are very interested to be here. Check out their military budget this year and how much is being poured into southeast asia.:)

I agree. Fire the first shot. There will be no shortage of Filipino heroes willing to defend our country.

By the way, did you see the news in china? They are saying now that the philippines 'violently harrased' their fishing vessels. Lol.

The truth of the matter is that the philippines made an inspection of the chinese vessels there and found them carrying endangered marine species like baby sharks, corals and giant clams. The philippines did not even arrest the chinese vessels illegally poachig these endangered marine life. As to not escalate the situation, they talked with the chinese embassy first, then those ships suddenly left while our coast guard vessel was being blocked by the chinese military surveilance ships.

How could they portray themselves as some sort of saint, when clearly, they are the aggressors in this situation and are the ones destabilizing the asian region?

Another point on this issue. Cooperation between the US and the Philippines has been going on for years. Are you aware of the fact that the Philippines actually informed the US of the terrorist's plans prior to 9/11? US did not act on it because they found the plans too incredible.

The US helped us gain our independence. We could still be part of the United States up to now if they did not help us establish a transition commonwealth government back then.

A lot of comments here are for the US being too greedy and that they want everything. But they gave us our independence.

Look at China now. Conflicts with Japan, with Taiwan, with Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines because they are wanting something that is not theirs.

If you're from mainland China, think. Why is all this happening and who is the root cause of all these problems?

This a dispute between the China and the Philippines, it does not involve me and I have no axe to grind since I am not Chinese. But from where I stand I think the Chinese claim is stronger than the Philippino claim.

I have seen no signs that China has any intention of firing the first shot. It is the Philippines who have been sending their gun boats, not China who have sent fishery vessels, to defuse the recent dispute. And if the relative displays of force are the measure of arrogance then it is surely the Philippines who take the prize.
