1 Elite "ASIANS"?...sweetie here in California, Asian means, Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Filipino etc...let me break it down. In terms of work ethics, being industrious, excelling in education, challenging the white man in every facet of mangagement, they all have that in common, aka "Model Minority"..but the when the conversation focuses on the persona and exterior appeal of asian men? Sweetie, the diverse women that I know all agree; Japanese men are known to be handsome, polite and masculine. Indian men are dark, exotically appealing with round eyes. Filipino men have hispanic-latino affinity which gives them sex appeal. This is in lew if whether they like black women or not. Chinese men have none of the above...sorry! |

More than half of the black children raised in poverty will remain in poverty as adults. The rate for white children is one third, according to the Economic Policy Institute, a nonprofit, nonpartisan think tank. "There's this wonderful notion in America of 'rags to riches' and 'pulling yourself up by your bootstraps,' " said Robert Langford, executive director for Operation Shoestring in Jackson. "But how do you pull yourself up by the bootstraps when you don't have any boots?" Ignoring poverty means stifling future growth, said Ed Sivak, director for the Mississippi Economic Policy Center. "If a third of our children in Mississippi are in poverty, it means a third of our future work force will be in poverty, too. Unless we make this issue a priority, the economic potential of our state is capped." Phil Reed, president of Voice of Calvary Ministries in Jackson, said the cycle of poverty in Mississippi is more difficult to break. "It's second-, third- and fourth generational poverty." More than a fifth of Mississippians (22.4 percent) now live in poverty. Three times as many African-American children (48 percent) live in poverty as do white children (16 percent). "Where one is born and where one is raised matters in Mississippi," Sivak and Sarah Welker wrote in their 2011 report for the Mississippi Economic Policy Center. "Many of the communities with the highest rates of child poverty also have the lowest performing school districts." Voice of Calvary Ministries uses a number of programs to help those in poverty break out, Reed said. "The middle class gets their value from jobs," he said. "Among those who are poor, relationships are more important than job and career." The church helped a woman get a job at a restaurant, he said. The first night, after six hours, she told her boss she had to leave and get her 27-year-old son. The second night, she left after two hours to get her son. The third night, she called her boss and said her son needed her. "To her, that made perfect sense, but of course she lost her job," he said. The tug of poverty remains, even for those who escape. According to the Economic Mobility Project, a third of Americans are "downwardly mobile," making less than their parents. Among black Americans, 45 percent of those raised middle class slide back into the worst poverty; among white Americans, that number is 16 percent. |
