Puerto Rico is not a "self-governing commonwealth" that belongs to the United States. Actually, although Puerto Ricans elect its governor, its legislatures and its mayors, it is not "self-governing" whereas its laws and its constitution are subject to that of the United States. Puerto Rico is a colony of the U.S. with a facade called "Commonwealth" (or its Spanish version: "Estado Libre Asociado"). Puerto Rico will be self-governing when it achieves its independence or, at the very least, a compact of free association as recognized by the United Nations.

43% of those who voted with the pro associate state, during this past elections, think there's a bi lateral pact with the U.S. That's why they insist on calling Puerto Rico, a nation.

Jorge,
I blame all parties of Puerto Rico. Just like in the USA, the democrats and republicans are too blame for the mess we are in.

Well, in PR, the PDP, NPP, PIP, and soon to be, the PPR have been the problems in the island to each a certain degree. Dont ask me to what degree! LOL

I blame the U.S. for allowing its own citizens, in Puerto Rico, to be disenfranchised, without proper congressional representation and intentionally, maintaining a colony for well over a century!

No, hombre, no. Si suena serio, excúsame; gordo. It may have been a bad connection. I think internet is being intercepted by the Chinese.

Jorge

Damn Chinese, first they want our banks, now our communications. What's next, our ...well, let's leave it at that. A little imagination travels much farther than words.

Jorge, how can you blame the US when so many PRicans dont want to learn english so they can understand what Washington D.C. is telling the people of the island. I know in San Juan, a few people speak english, but other than that, while I lived there, I had to speak my ''spanish'' to the people, which many times I was visited with ugly faces because I was able to speak english as well as their language, spanish.

Also, the NPP, which I feel is not a ''true'' statehood party. They are more interested in 'waving' the USA flag around, but when it coomes to truly leading the island toward statehood, I feel they have failed.

I am not supporting any party, but while I was there, they all are terrible without saying something more dirty. LOL

Take care....always...tjm

Washington has to speak in Spanish, not the other way around. The U.S. has no official language.

On the other hand, the NPP is not our vehicle to statehood. They may have "advancing statehood" in their party platform, but it is a political party, run by politicians who deal with specific social and economic issues.

Statehood is being attended outside the NPP.

Puerto Ricans should have listened to Pres. Roosevelt back in April 7, 1937, when he stated that Puerto Ricans should learn spanish,,,not because of the association with the US, but for expanded opportunities globally! Im sure today, with the economic situation in Puerto Rico, they wished they would have listened to him.
