It happens so that I am always searching for updates on the Cape Verde Islands, and I coincidentally, found your message. Thanks for showing interests in learning about the islands. Cape Verde is pretty much an independent country, geographically; but after its independence in 1975 it joined the Western African Nation. The people are of multiracial backgrounds consisted of European, African, and other race descendants-80%, 17% black, 3% whites.

The majority of capeverdeans don't consider themselves blacks, myself I don't consider myself black. we are in the majority mixed-race-portuguese people.

Hi Brittany, What a terrible comment. I have just returned from Cape Verde and found everyone there beautiful. So much so that I am going back in two weeks with my family. For all of you who have not visited make the effort. It is worth it, but please don't take your prejudices with you!

We have just returned from Cape Verde and the islands and people are stunning. We have been telling all our friends how beautiful the locals are both in looks and in personality. They are the most friendly people i have met.

We can't wait to go back.

We are currently buying a property on the island of Santiago (the largets of the Cape Verdean) islands - its beautiful!!!

Hey Cape Verdean people!!

I'm trying to find more information about my ancestors and it has been the hadest thing! My last name is both Portuguese and Italian so its really hard to pinpoint where exactly my grandfather came from. He died before I got to know him and my father was born and raised in the US and unfortunately, he and his siblings have not reached out to find out about their heritage which really makes me upset.

Also I just wanted to comment that I do consider myself Black and very proud to be. Cape Verdeans are in my opinion, Africans first. The Portuguese enslaved them and thats how we became mixed but I don't think we should forget our African roots also. Here's a test...Ask a white person in America what your race is...And yes, Cape Verdeans are natural Beauties!

Hello Latoya, thanks for your comments, they are very sweet!! It is nice that you are searching for your ancestors. Looking at your last name, however, I think it is more Spanish sound than Capeverdean or Portuguse. The Portuguse spelling of your last name is Camilo (only one L). Italian is an option too. Actually,Ms. Brittany has a portuguese last name! Capeverdean people are BLACK...straight out of Africa! One drop of white/European blood does not make yoou white/European!

I'm not sure I understood your comment well? Who made a comment that Capeverdean people are White or Black? And where does your comment that one drop of White/European would make us anything? Not sure where you come from, but please keep your comments. It is not in your place or anyone's place to argue history of people of Cape Verde or of anywhere. The history is there just read and learn. Cape Verde's history is going back to over 500 years ago when a first Capeverdean was born from a White Master and his a slave woman. From there, it has been a mix after mix. Tavares can be either Capeverdean or Portuguese/Brazilian last name. FYI if "White" is determined by the color of your skin you should know that there many so call "Whites" born from Capeverde. We should stop being so ignorant and try to focus on issues that truly matters, and don't think one's race should be of much importance days now.
