Shortly before 2 p.m., Environment Canada began issuing warnings and watches for several areas surrounding Toronto, from Halton and Peel all the way to Cornwall and Morrisburg.
One-centimetre balls of hail have reportedly been falling from the skies above Newmarket and according to Geoff Coulson, a warning preparedness meteorologist for Environment Canada, we should expect this type of activity to continue throughout southern Ontario until past midnight.
"With the storms, the main concerns right now are a period of very, very heavy rainfall, the small hail that we've already talked about and we have reports of estimated wind gusts of about 60 km/h," Coulson said.
The possibility of thunderstorms will last through the early evening.
Although the weather may seem bad — with the hail and the possibility of severe thunderstorms — Coulson said it actually isn't considered "severe" in the technical term.
"Right now, these storms are below that criteria but the warning is still out," he said.
But, he continued, it doesn't mean it cannot happen...
