Ottawa to pay farmers $50-million to slaughter hogs

In an unprecedented move, the federal government plans to pay hog farmers up to $50-million in total to slaughter as many as 150,000 breeding swine.

Farmers will receive $225 for every hog they kill, so long as they agree to wipe out their entire breeding herd and stay out of the hog business for three years. The government hopes the program will reduce a glut on the market that has helped drive down prices.

It's sad when a living, breathing, intelligent animal is killed for no other reason than to push prices up. What they gonna do with the carcasus? Dump it?

However, this does not surprise me coming from Canada. They have a reputation.

Why are we trying to ease a 'glut in the market'? If anything, a glut of hogs is a GOOD thing, maybe we can send some of that pork over to the foreign countries that need meat.

Why does the government insist in screwing the people with this socialist practice of appeasing the agricultural sector?

Here we pay 3 times the price of the nearby Americal dairy, meat and other products. Why? Because of this annoying practice of screwing the the majority for the sake of a few.

So much for free trade.

Here's a novel idea - give the (needlessly slaughtered) meat to homeless shelters, food pantries.

What a friggin WASTE! How long before humans are deemed too plenty, and a price is put on OUR heads?

And what does PETA feel about this? Bet they will have a field day.

PETA wont care because hunters are not involved. PETA animal shelters still kill pets that are not adopted, what makes their practice any better?.

PETA has also been investigated and i believe, linked to animal rights terrorists groups like ALF.

Why not just put them in a C130 cargo plane and drop them over Pakistan where Osama is hiding? Dropping pork on a muslim is worse than dropping a bomb.

total insanity by government. Just goes to show the disdain government has for its subjects. More so, love of money. An affordable food source for many people suffering from high cost of living. As said above, a minority of people deciding for the majority. Joseph stalin is alive and well in canada.

Why hasn't someone in the IMF suggested that the wonderous "invisible hand" that guides the markets of capitalizm informed the president of the IMF there seems to be a disconnect here?

Once again... money over life... and people wonder why this world is the way it is... if it ain't money, it's religion... if it ain't religion its war... the preservation of life of ANY kind has taken a back burner. SAD.

Nah, american controls canada and the Jews control them both, right along with other nations.

They can't let Canadians and Americans have decent food for a decent price when they get their money grubbing mitts on it.

They must really hate our children.

Let me see now??? The Canadian government is going to pay pig farmers $50,000,000 to kill hogs to drive up the market price so that pig farmers can make more money per pig. Hmmm???? Why not let the pig farmers keep the hogs and reduce taxes by at least $50,000,000 to relieve the burden foisted upon Canadian farmers by their federal government. A government composed of over-paid blood-sucking bureaucrats and politicians (just like ours in the USA), whose only means of support is nursing at Joe Taxpayer's tit. These bureaucrats and politicians couldn't hold a job on a pig farm let alone advise how to run one. They're too lazy and lack the brains needed to even slop the hogs.=====And since when is a low price on ham a sin? What about the consumers who will be paying the higher price to eat. That good old sucker of a consumer is paying the tab again. Geeez!! The US has been doing this sort of thing since The New Deal days of the 1930's when that charming old air-headed, progressive liberal, war mongering Democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt introduced the bureaucrats into determining farm policy in the 1930's. It is still used today as a means to control prices in the US farm market. It wasn't good for the little guy then and it isn't good for him now. Our food costs would be more than cut in half if the government dissolved the US Department of Agriculture AND repealed the legislation for the same enacted over the years..====The Canadian farmers are on the receiving end of more special interest legislation (which they've paid for) from politicians who obviously receive much of their political support from---guess who, and read big bucks----from the organized farmers.====Farmers why don't you stop crying to the federal government for protective legislation which hurts the consumer more than your gain helps you. Why don't you use your substantial clout positively by demanding, insisting on and unreasonably getting in the faces of those lying, blood-sucking bureaucrats and politicians. Demand that the politicians lower the taxes and over-head foisted on you by those same blood-sucking bureaucrats and power hungry, lying politicians. Demand less regulation of your product, demand a reduction in taxes to offset your costs or---save your money by not donating so much to your enemy the politicians.====Demand that they lay-off the blood suckers in your government to save enough in taxes to offset the temporary unemployment benefits of the out of work bureaucrats. Then demand your taxes be reduced SIGNIFICANTLY. YEAH!!!====LESS GOVERNMENT--GO BABY--GO===BRING IT ON====YEAH!!!!

Interesting comments about PETA not caring about animals if they are not killed by hunters?! I suppose ignorance is bliss. I am not a member of PETA but am informed enough to know that the name stands for People for Ethical Treatment of Animals - all animals! And I am not a member of ALF (or ever have been) but these "terrorist" groups do not advocate the harming of people - they have been known to destroy laboratories and equipment used in the torturing of animals through vivisection (a falicious pseudo-science)and help in relocating animals that are not yet beyond having a new, torture-less life. As for the pig situation - it would make sense that any animal carcasses due to this "bounty" are used to feed the hungry (it would be hoped that the Canadian Government would also specify these animals should die a humane death) Respect and compassionate treatment of life is a true sign of an intelligent and genuinely civilized nation (and person). If not, how much have we truly evolved from our archaic past?
