What I would like to see... is the animation of the bas-relief on the wall of Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom. It would be awesome to see the curvings come to life. Hope someone could do that someday.

Today modern Cambodia has its root dated back over 2,000 years. There are a lot of folkors, legends, and stories that are kept alive that need to be made into movies. Just as the Greek and Roman had the story of famous heroes, mystical monsters, and unforgettable battles, Khmer is no different. It would be a big hit if one or few very good film makers can recreate as close as possible in depiction of ancient Funan, Chanla, and Khmer Angkor.

any story to make a film is up to the director/producer's choice.
like many countries in the world, the strong influence and popularity of hollywood film putting their own film into a dying industry and art. learn from the other asian countries such as korea, and india.this perhaps a model cambodia can follow. the recent mega hit corcodile and motherless already proven both ways are successful. Cambodia film industry is on the right track and moving fast to improve itself. make a better film or sellable movie is a balance of everything. and like acrobat walking on a thin wire. if you have some money i will tell you frankly don;t make a film better keep it for future. if you want to make some money out of film, then learn to make a better one, sooneror later, the local audience will demand to see better and better khmer films. we all hope khmer film will be this & that... the best way is pick up a pencil and start writing /drawing on paper. and make it out. Today Khmer movie industry is at its most infancy stage. It is no where compare to the Ballywood of India, Hollywood of America, or Chinese films, or Korean films for that matter. Prior to the madness of Khmer Rouge, there were a lot of good Khmer films. Some are still selling in DVDs shops. There are quite a few movie entrepreneurs who lack education and experience in this business and attempted to make movies for the Cambodian audiences. For a fast buck with low budget shots, people don't seem to mind spending $5 for a DVDs, watch it then might throw it away. But there are a few ups and comings serious diehard Cambodian film makers who are out there trying to show that Cambodian can and should make good movies. With some stumbles along the road, Cambodian movie makers can and will make such movies as good as the Chinese or the Ballywood, not meant to be arrogance. |

If you cannot remember why there's a boom in recent Khmer cinema is due to the tension between Thailand and Cambodia in 2003. that moment many new cinemas were built and a sudden embargo of Thai films forced the khmers to make their own films. the result is a fastest growing film industry in Asean region or even in the world.
similar case to korea when the ratio of quota between foreign films and local films changed, the korean film industry suddenly strife to survive and the side effect( if you think so) is a big wave of korean films and audience seems don;t mind at all. Let the film entrepreneurs make enough money and they will very very soon knows what to do to improve themselves, education and experience --- u can self educate about anything,( yes, i didn;t study film in school. i learn film making by watching and making film and best Uni -Google) i am focusing in training film in cambodia, 2 of my trainees are currently workignin TV stations and been in film productions. it takes 2 minutes to show how to search on google on any topic, and it's up to the person will stay 2 day or even 2 weeks to learn from it. Please produce more dance and music DVDs to help promote their beauty to the world! i have a JVC/Smithsonian vid of apsara dance in front of Angkor Wat. It makes me so sad to see Khmer youth struggling to maintain the tradition after the horrible cultural destruction and murder of arts masters. They don't have to be fancy, or even have a "movie" plot, just documentary style, for the beauty to shine through.

People can see the threats and influence of Hollywood movies on their local film industry.
For Cambodia, its people have suffered from wars and conflicts for centuries, and have become quite mentally lazy to think about all these influences. My concern for the survival and development of Cambodian films is not just the Hollywood, but specifically Chinese movies. Many Cambodians like to see Chinese movies and they can see these movies everyday on television. This is another big threat which has been going unnoticed. Why do the Khmer people not support their local films? There maybe some factors involved, one of which is the quality of the local films. It was and still is time for improvement. Let's go for an international competition! |

hey, I am currently going to a school in U.S. studying finance because my parents want me to. However, I am also majoring in film (secretly) because of my passion for it. More and More, I become very emotional about Khmer cinema and the past, espcially when i listen to old Sinn Sisamouth's songs in the movies and such. One thing that makes me proud to be khmer is our culture: the farm the country. Most khmer become so fascinated with modernity that they forget where the real beauty is at. I'm just starting out but I made promise to myself that I will help bring back Khmer cinema. So if you have any good advice, please rsokha@luc.edu thanks!

I agree with Khmer Bird. New thing has to be initiated by somebody, and it must be us, the younger generation.
