How sad. But face it, this is no different than the people that want to do extreme sports. If you die doing it, tough, you knew the risk and I'm not going to waste sympathy on you. As far as being a "world citizen", that seems to be all fine with people with her mind set until they get in some kind of bind or trouble, then all the sudden it's "I'm a US citizen". The Peace Corps has a reputation of not looking out for the safety of their people very well so I hope people think really hard before joining them. But if you do join them, you and your family should be prepared to get yourself out of the situations you get into and not rely on the US military or other US forces and resources to get you out. When these "world citizens" put themselves in these situations, it results in harm coming to other US citizens that getting hurt or killed and costing huge tax dollars. Let NATO take care of them if they're truly "world citizens".

They said their daughter was not raped or robbed and that they believe her death was not random or politically motivated. "We think that because she was standing up for people who couldn't stand up for themselves, she got herself in harm's way," Lois Puzey said. Neither the State Department nor the Peace Corps has commented on the cause of death, which will be determined by U.S. and local investigators.

You're making a pretty broad assumption that all students head off to foreign lands to volunteer. I think you are wrong here, and it is insulting to those people who stay here and help their "fellow countrymen". Why can't we do both? Those are people over there that do not have even a fraction of the resources that our great nation has. I saw that Dateline special as well on Appalachia. My heart breaks for those children. Do you remember what they say is the main cause of tooth decay in that area? Mountain Dew. Parents put it in their baby's bottles, for goodness sake! It doesn't take a college education to realize that is not healthy for a child. And the drug use there is rampant! I am all for helping people, but not when they don't make any effort to help themselves.

A couple hundred years of oppression by the coal companies and the UMU unions have kept them no better than slaves. Education, health care, social activities that enlighten are all substandard. These people don't know any better and the "educated" liberal elites that are so gung ho on helping everywhere but here don't want to soil their hands or get anywhere around the likes of those who desperately need help. Face it the W&M and other elite university crowd thinks they are sub-human and their actions or lack of action proves it.

I served with honor in the most effective of peace corps...the United States Military. Name one other organization that has brought peace to more people worldwide as compared to our US Military...we have been doing this successfully for centuries. And we did it using the most effective tools of freedom...guns.

That documentary is a bunch of crap. Appalachia is much better off than Bad Newz. In appalachia you can go anywhere you want. Try that on Wickham Avenue. These little liberal darlings who ignore the plight of their own countrymen and women can't be bothered in defending the freedom that allows them to do it holding those who defend our country in contempt like the liberal democrats. If some of them would dare venture out of the gated communities their parents live in they would find plenty of opportunities right outside the gate to help fellow citizens.

So let me get this straight this woman flies over to africa to help the little africans "better themselves" meanwhile she might still be alive if she picked a place a little "less-colorful" say like Moldava? Let's see Moldova's annual average income is $2500 meanwhile Benin is only $1500. One is in filth covered africa that's been given foreign aid for decades yet how many aid groups do you think are operating in Moldova? So she picks africa since it's the usual place for the unimaginative and non-researching "global-helpers" who in the case of this one could have picked a place with a little different skin-tone and she might actually be alive rather than being another Amy Biehl? Well glad to see another naive little "helper" is gone to the big refugee camp in the sky. Goodbye and enjoy the afterlife you waste of flesh.

You must mis-understood my question. Why haven't they commented on the cause of death?? It is clear that she wasn't rapped or robbed, but HOW did she die?? Shot? Strangled? Stabbed?? They're leaving out information on her murder.

Again, you are making the assumption that no one volunteers to help in Appalachia. Why can't people help here and abroad? What is so wrong about that?

A significant number of Peace Corps volunteers are veterans. The Corps seeks these because the military brings a level of life experience and discipline that is unavailable in most recent college graduates. The Peace Corps maintains a close relationship with the military, which provides extraction, med-Evac and emergency medical services worldwide. Patriot wrote: <quoted text> I also did the same. Most Volunteers in Peace Corps also spend significant years and hours also volunteering in the US. Three goals of PC include serving others but also educating others about life abroad and helping people abroad understand America. It's one-on-one diplomacy - some of the most effective kind. And given the hateful language in so many posts here, who could blame anyone for leaving the US to live with others who are more humane? And to the person who calls Africa a landfill - you are talking about over 250 million people living in a space three and-a-half times the size of the continental US. Just like in the US, there are amazing people there, amazing land, and there are a few bad seeds. It seems you live a very ugly life to determine Africans are so different from you. May God bless you. Finally, Safety and Security of Volunteers is a top priority of Peac Corps. There are nearly 8000 Volunteers around the world and PC does all in its power to protect Volunteers, but tragedies happen there as everywhere. To the Puzey family - your daughter was a blessing on the earth and she was lucky to have you raise her.

Bad Newz is much more dangerous than most places the Peace Corps goes. In many developing countries the justice system is absolutely savage. They do not tolerate what we see on a daily basis here. Their justice system is not a revolving door and their society is not eaten up with self-serving lawyers and other parasites.
The two that killed the volunteer will soon be executed. The village she helped will demand it if they don't do it themselves. The government that invited the Peace Corps in will seek to make a example. It those two are not dead already they soon will be.

Everyone, please, stop the negative commenting. It is disgusting. This is a story about someone who has just died, and in a brutal and undeserved manner. Someone who died doing a good deed- it does not matter where the deed was being done. We need more people out there such as Kate who are willing to go above and beyond to help others and leave their comfort zones behind. Help is help. Have more respect, especially considering the family might be reading this. If you want to argue politics and poverty in America, this is not the place to do so. May God Bless her. May God Bless her family. And may justice be served.
