What can I expect in Belize? Are people friendly? Is it safe? How much money does it take to live comfortable? Are there many Americans living there? Is there good health care?

Talk to expats in Belize live at: www.sollifestyles.com .
Medical care for minor conditions is generally available in urban areas. Trauma or advanced medical care is limited even in Belize City; it is extremely limited or unavailable in rural areas. Serious injuries or illnesses often necessitate evacuation to another country. The Government of Belize reported an outbreak of dengue fever in April, May and June of 2005.
Information on vaccinations and other health precautions, such as safe food and water precautions and insect bite protection, may be obtained from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s hotline for international travelers at 1-877-FYI-TRIP (1-877-394-8747) or via the CDC’s web site at http://wwwn.cdc.gov/travel/default.aspx . For information about outbreaks of infectious diseases abroad consult the World Health Organization’s (WHO) web site at http://www.who.int/en . Further health information for travelers is available at http://www.who.int/ith/en .
To calculate or get an approximate of the average cost of living in Belize, you have to assess the kind of lifestyle you intend to live while staying in the country. Are you going to start a business? What type of living arrangements are you going to prepare? Are you going to shopping for possible real estate properties? These questions and such will help you determine the factors which will affect your living expenses.
According to the International Monetary Fund of 2005, the GDP (Gross Domestic Product) per person in Belize is USD 7,835, putting them as the 83rd in the whole world. A year after, partly because of economic growth, the country's GDP grew to USD 8,400, making them 76th in the world ranking.
What is GDP and why should you care about it if you want to know the average cost of living in Belize? Technically, GDP is defined as the total market value of all goods and services produced in a specified period (usually 1 calendar year for economic measurement). Think of this: the GDP of a country is the amount of money needed in order to survive living in one year. In Belize's case, it was USD 8,400 in 2006 and the figure is lower compared to 75 other countries.
General consumer products taken in consideration for living expenses are essential food items. Fresh fruits and vegetables in Belize are definitely more affordable compared to the United States. Street vendors and farmers markets are the best places to acquire such produces. If you know or learned how to shop your necessary food staples, a weekly food budget of USD 30 can sustain a simple lifestyle in Belize.
In terms or real estate the increase in tourism and immigration land prices are increasing but they are still very reasonable. If you are going to rent or lease property you will find that again if you are going to reside in the tourist areas then rents will be more expensive. However if are content with living outside these area the cost of renting is very low.

There is way too much crime in Belize. I lived there and was "jacked" everywhere, including my home several times. Everyone has their hand out--especially the law enforcement, which is completely and utterly criminal. I witnessed a lot of beauty there--but also four different cultures that despise one another, and one would not be off-the-mark to say it is so lawless there that it is like the wild, wild west. Go at your own risk--but believe me--you will get taken if you are American. The Government is totally against the American there--do not believe the propoganda. I went through their bogus "programs" for Americans, and they ripped me off over and over. Everyone--absolutely everyone--wanted paid off. It is the norm there, and everyone knows it. It is not just initially either--it continues and continues. Many (not all) Creole basically hate Americans unless you are giving something to them. If you stop giving them things, then that can become a huge problem, too. I am a physician, and I looked at the problems from many standpoints--but try as I might--I could not resolve the crime problem there on my own and had to leave. And don't get me started about how they treat their dogs there--it is acutely inhumane--and most dogs are skin and bones and starving to death. Usually, they regularly throw out poisoned meat to rid them from tourist view. I found many unsatisfied Americans there, yet most are reluctant to admit the real truth of Belize--lest their "dream in paradise" be shattered. I was one of them for a little while...until the obvious truth kept rearing its ugly head. BTW, crime is basically NOT reported in Belize. I was told many times that if I reported that they robbed me, that they would return and kill me. It was just terrible living with that fear. Oh, and the cost of doing business is known as "a boat a year". Meaning, if Americans want to make money off of "their country and their waters", then be prepared to pay up with some of your possessions. Which leads me to the biggest bitch about Belize--that you absolutely cannot leave your home unattended for even five minutes--as in to walk around in the woods near your house--because they watch you and wait until you are not looking to steal. You cannot go to town, out to the reef, or anywhere without someone staying in your home to oversee it. This does not mean you won't get "jacked" (robbed) anyway. They actually robbed me while I was giving them money and work--at the very moment I was handing them money for working (at much higher than they are used to getting), they had their children running around ripping me off. It is dreadful. I would never, ever suggest to anyone that they retire in Belize. They have massive social, political, and criminal problems that will need a lot of work to improve. No offense to anyone who lives there now--but I spent many years there and you know what I am saying is the truth.

I have been there number of times and follow closely. I don't disagree with many of the comments. There are areas in Belize that are worse than others. One of the worst areas is Belize City.
If you go to most places and live modest like one of them, treat them with respect and use common sense
you will be just fine. It still will cost you more than a native Belizean for most things.

I echo loudly the sentiments of Palidan! Belize culture, if you can call it that, is Anti American, at Best, with brutal cops who target every "White Person" for robbery, extortion, and as Palidan said, Murder. If you don't give to the criminal National police of this country of criminals they will take, first by sending in their drug addict thieves and if that doesn't work, they will set you up with planted evidence and Jail you, taking everything you have. This is an incestuous population that has a murder and violent crime rate 15 times higher that the Worst US inner city and a elected Dictatorship run by Allies of Chavez and Castro. You take your own life in your hands, just by visiting this Cesspool, Belizeans call the Jewel, let alone moving there. Besides the Creol being racist against White Americans the uncivilized Garifuna are far worse and control the Death Squads of the National Police! Drug Cartels control the Ministers. Beware of Belize.

"Four races that despise each other?", "most Creoles hate Americans?" - give me a break! As a Belizean I can tell you we're the ones who should be complaining. Americans buy sic.(swindle) up all the land from poor desperate Belizeans, sell them at exorbitant prices that over 90% of the population would never be able to afford and then have the nerve to still complain about how "bad" they've got in Belize.
As for crime and corrupt cops I don't deny that they're out there but let's be realistic for a second - there are umpteens of Americans that go to Belize to set up drug smuggling operations, molest our kids and rape our natural resources. As far as I'm concerned if a few white trash get ripped off from time to time that's not injustice - that's our just desserts!

I have read a lot about Belize as a friend of mine had recently moved there. The murder rate is abnormally high- and often is done by machetee or chopping. It gies unreported because the corrupt government and people profiting off American tourists paint a lovely picture of a once majestic country. Americans that have moved there to start a business are leaving in droves. Many guesthouses are up for sale. It is a very poor
country- people are desperate and violent . Rape and violent murder are commonplace against Americans. Read the papers and blogs about crime. They have a very serious
problem and are trying to cover it up as they rely upon whatever tourists they can still attract to the ruins, tubing, and etc.

I feel sorry for the people who live there. The place is a he'll hole- very dangerous. You would never know by reading the travel books. They deliberately paint a very different picture. The once beautiful jewel of Belize is now beyond a fourth world country.
I would advise anyone against traveling there
unless they are prepared to deal with the realities of being hijacked, robbed, murdrered
etc. People keep the truth covered up because they are afraid things will just get worse and they won't be able to rent or sell their property.

All of you have quite realistic views of Americans.

Please let me know "How do Belizeans feel about Canadians"?

Thank you for all the info and your time.

Daily Horoscope for December 31

Taurus

Friends and partners aren't behaving as you would like today. They're eager to go their own way, much to your annoyance. In order to get round this you're going to have to ask yourself some tricky questions, such as whether you're trying to control everyone's behavior or whether they're being inconsiderate in wanting to do their own thing. It's a Full Moon and a lunar eclipse, so maybe you should all release the tension by making it a super New Year's Eve celebration?
