Islamabad, July 14 : PPP leader and Pakistan Information Minister Sherry Rehman has been nominated for the 'International Peace Award 2008 for Democrats', for her contribution for the promotion of democracy and human rights in her country.
The award is conferred by the International Human Rights Commission every year. Sherry, who is considered close to Bhutto family, would be the second PPP leader to get this award after former premier Benazir Bhutto, who received the award in 1996. She was in the same car in which Benazir Bhutto was gunned down on December 27 last year after she had finished addressing a party rally in the run up to the general elections. Dr Muhammad Shahid Amin, ambassador and chairman of the International Human Rights Commission, said that the award was being conferred on Sherry for her role in promoting human rights and justice for the women. "The Award is recognition of the services rendered by Ms Rehman in the area of democracy, human rights, gender justice, women development and media independence. In her political and journalistic career spanning over two decades, she has made remarkable contribution for the promotion of democratic values, equal rights and media freedom. She played a very important role for the restoration of democracy in Pakistan," the dawn quoted him as saying. |

MULTAN, July 25: Deposed Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry was accorded a warm welcome by a large number of lawyers and political activists on his arrival here on Friday.
On Saturday morning, he would leave for Bahawalpur via Shujabad, Jalalpur Pirwala and Lodhran. In Bahawalpur, he would address a lawyers’ convention. The welcome rally was more impressive than the long march which had started from here on June 10 with larger participation of lawyers and PML-N workers. Activists of Jamaat-i-Islami and Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaaf were also at the airport to welcome Justice Iftikhar. The deposed chief justice was taken to the city in a procession. The participants chanted slogans in support of independent judiciary and reinstatement of the judges. Strict security arrangements were made and Punjab Police personnel were deployed along the route of the procession. |

Reinstate the judges or be eventually booted out yourself.
Musharraf should pack up and leave. There can never be a better Pakistan with him. FINELINE... PML-N Secretary Information Ahsan Iqbal said on Friday the restoration of the deposed judges and the impeachment of President Pervez Musharraf were vital for the survival of the ruling coalition. Talking to reporters here after a meeting with a delegation of the Rahim Yar Khan Press Club, Ahsan said his party would continue its efforts for the restoration of the deposed judges in accordance with the Murree Declaration. “The restoration of the deposed judges is the key to political stability and economic development,” he said. This was why the PML-N was pressing the PPP leadership to restore the deposed judges in accordance with the March 9 declaration, he added. Ahsan said the restoration of the pre-November 3 judiciary was a cause dear to all segments of the society. The PML-N leader said the coalition government had a two-thirds majority for the impeachment proceedings at a joint session of the parliament.“We need to have the political will and courage,” he added. He said the president could not use Article 58(2)b if the PML-N and PPP leaderships were united. Ahsan said the PML-N had not been taken into confidence before taking major decisions, including the gubernatorial appointments and the Fata operation, but despite that, the party wished to work and strengthen the PPP-led government to counter all the conspiracies. Replying to a question, he said the party would decide a new course of action in case the deposed judges were not restored in accordance with the Murree Declaration. He, however, believed that the judges would be restored after a next meeting between Nawaz Sharif and Asif Ali Zardari. The meeting, he said, was not scheduled so far but both the leaders would meet soon after the return of Nawaz Sharif from the UK.Earlier, during the meeting with the Rahim Yar Khan Press Club delegation, Ahsan appreciated the performance of the media. |

Daly Times Monitor
LAHORE: Pakistan People’s Party Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari wants the restoration of the sacked judiciary and a delay in this regard is beyond understanding, Supreme Court Bar Association President Aitzaz Ahsan told a lawyers’ convention in Bahawalpur on Sunday. He said that independent judiciary and good economy were interlinked, ARY One World reported.“Investors do not come to a country where judiciary is not independent,” he said, adding that President Pervez Musharraf would become “a part of bygone days” if the rulers supported the lawyers’ movement. He said the politicians should not wait for the population to stand against them, adding that the reinstatement of the judges by August 14 did not seem possible. |

President Pervez Musharraf has no political future, Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer told a satellite channel on Monday.
In an interview with Channel-5, Taseer said parliament will decide about the future of the executive’s head. The parliament should decide about the president’s impeachment and the sacked judges’ reinstatement, he said, adding that the use of Article 58 (2b) was not possible now. The country needs the politics of reconciliation, Taseer said, adding that contesting election was not a pre-condition to be called a politician. He said that the opposition leader in the Punjab Assembly should be immediately appointed. He said there are several prominent leaders in the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid, and that he had never said that the party existed no more. Terming the lawyers’ movement as “a dead horse”, Taseer said there were more people at the Urs of Sufi saint Waris Shah than in the lawyers’ long march. He said that PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif would not be the chief minister if being a governor he had not accepted resignation of Dost Muhammad Khosa. |

It is high time for the final round of talks with Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Co-chairman Asif Zardari on judges’ reinstatement and impeachment of President Pervez Musharraf, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif said on Tuesday.
Talking to reporters at Lahore airport, Nawaz said he would talk to the PPP leadership about not fulfilling the promises, adding that the mandate given on Feb 18 had not been translated into reality until now. He said the promises of judges’ restoration and impeachment of Musharraf had not been fulfilled. Nawaz said he was likely to meet Zardari in the next few days wherein he would discuss all these issues, adding that his party wanted to have a parliamentary debate regarding the government’s policy on FATA. He said PML-N had the same view on the judges’ issue as that of the lawyers, adding that Pakistan’s future depended on an independent judiciary. |
