Aussie restlessness echoes in U.S.

The Aussie choice between continued prosperity and utter socialism is pretty clear. Note how defly Dionne projects his own lefting views by quoting Labor on the election - "...a fear campaign based on the economy..." - instead of just saying what he thinks of Howard.

Howard is the greatest leader in the world today. Without him, Australia would be overrun with Islamists.

Australia’s recent economic success has little to do with Johnny, if any of you haven’t noticed, the entire global economy is doing extremely well, add to that the unprecedented resources boom and you have the reason for our prosperity.

Throw in the big F*#K you from Johnny to the average worker in the form of so called industrial relations reform, importing skilled workers while removing incentives and opportunities for young people to gain apprenticeships and university placements, removal of basic rights under the transparent and weak guise of anti-terrorism, abandonment of Australian citizens overseas, lack of environmental foresight, interest rate rises and I would think it is time for a change.

I notice the support so far is just from sepo’s, that just puts another nail in Johnny’s coffin as far as I’m concerned.

Are you crazy or just blind. This country has experienced pack rapes and all sorts of crime associated with people claiming to be Islamists.
Insult after insult has been directed at the people of this country from those connected to the highest levels of Islam, to such an extent, it seems we are overrun with many of the worst kind of followers of that faith.
Howard has done nothing about it, except use it to distract this nations sheep and get re elected.
How you can claim one of the biggest liars in Australian history, as the greatest leader in this world today, is beyond me and over half the people of this Nation.
Howard is an old man, way past his use by date and way out of touch with the technology of today.
The shitty broadband service the ignorant old fool has lumbered us with is all the evidence you need of that.

Only the abusers of those less fortunate would want him back in, so they can continue to exploit the work force and share in the sell off of the assets which all the taxpayers of this nation paid for and once owned, which now only belong to the greedy and lazy of this nation, the shareholders.
Instead of the fair priced services which we once enjoyed from our Government controlled facilities, all we've seen since privatisation has been rising costs and poor service.
Bring back the public service, at least the consumer got a fair bang for their buck back then.

I'm a young American living in Melbourne, Australia, since June of 2006, and I have to wonder what restlessness this reporter is referring to. Maybe it's just the Australians I know, but I tend to think it is a lot here like it is in the States, with a lot of people saying they want one or the other group in, but not ultimately caring enough to really work toward a change. Political matters do not enter into the minds of many on a daily basis; if they do, it is briefly so. Many will vote the way someone or their parents have told them to, or they will vote the opposite way they did last time, out of anger. It's not all that different from anywhere else that has voting rights. And this "restlessness" is not so restless. It's more on par with an "oh shit, we're still screwed" and then panning to the next part of the dinner conversation. But this is a Washington Post columnist. Sensationalizing is necessary for them, apparently.

When will people learn? Powerful governments will always screw over the people, because large amounts of power corrupt. That's all there is to it. The only difference is that one party screws you one way, and the other screws you in another way. People just tend to forget that over the course of four to eight (or, in the case of Howard in Oz, 11) years' time.

From what I can tell, Howard has done some good things, but he's still a politician and has pretty much put the power in the government's hands, rather than the people's. This is typical, and you can pretty well bet that the new (or same) prime minister, no matter who gets into office this time, will continue on the big-government pathway.

Just my 2 Sepo cents.

Would just like to say that Oz is far from a free market and, like the US, has quite a few oligopolies going on that absurdly fixes prices. If it were a free market, where the government wasn't supporting certain things (such as, say, Connex public transport), the competition among companies would naturally bring prices down.

The problem is the government, but the answer is not more government. The answer is less.

I cant belive some people think its a good idea to blow open the future fund just because you dont have instent internet.
