How do you decide if someone is loyal enough? Would the authors of this report be considered disloyal? What do you do with the Aboriginals, or native born Australians who aren't loyal? You asked my opinion of how an Australian is defined, I told you. It's only my personal opinion, I wasn't suggesting that 'loyalty commissions' be instituted to ensure that new citizens meet the criteria. Naturalisation is only a legality, they give it away like confetti. Because someone has been here for a few years and hasn't broken the law doesn't make them an Australian in their heart.

Your opinion is just that, and fair enough. Still, I wasn't suggesting you were advocating 'loyalty commissions' just pointing out that the idea is more complex than being 'Australian at heart'.

I probably should have had two more cups of coffee before starting to type this A.M. so my apologies if I came across as too abrasive. Stick to your guns girl! You've got it right, " assimilate or stay home". Yes, you should have more coffee, because you sounded CRAZY. I mean not just a little off, not just,'oh golly, I woke up on the wrong side of the bed', but actually INSANE. I'm sure people are very grateful to get your support. Phew.

That's why a distinction is drawn between naturalised citizens and the native born (not just in Australia). It is natural for a people to feel loyalty for their country, culture or ethnic group and very difficult to change loyalties. To run for US president, the candidate must be born in America - there's a good reason for that rule.

You got some very patriotic girls there in Oz and you ought to appreciate them. Alas, the universal frailty that can be summed up in the phrase,"You don't know what you got til it's gone".

I wonder why you are so black or white with some subjects, and with some you say they are more complex? As Dee said, everything is not as it seems, and taking things at face value is always a mistake. Very few things 'just are that' and anything our Gov. does 'never is just that'. Having said that, I've now forgotten what I was originally going to say and can't remember what this thread is about!!! I'm loosing the plot!!! Think I'm looking forward to packing up my computer on Sunday!
